TEMPLE BETH ISRAEL is an egalitarian community synagogue serving Harlingen, Texas, and surrounding areas. The synagogue is a warm and welcoming group of friends, many of whose families founded the temple in the 1950s. About 60 families are affiliated today, and the congregation is growing. Beth Israel offers religion and Hebrew classes for children. A renovated school building behind the synagogue houses four classrooms, a library, and an office.

An 1,100-year-old Hebrew Bible sold for $38.1 million at a Sotheby’s auction Wednesday, becoming the most expensive book ever sold.

Known as the Codex Sassoon, it was bought by the Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv through a donation from Alfred Moses, a former U.S. ambassador to Romania.
