Please welcome our new brothers and sisters in Christ to the IN-KY Synod!

In September 2019, Mara Evangelical Church Indianapolis (MECI) consisting of 128 people approached the Indiana-Kentucky Synod with an interest in becoming a part of the IN-KY Synod and the ELCA.

This faith community is made up of refugees from Myanmar. MECI became a Synod Authorized Worshipping Community exploration in November 2020, and then moved into being a Synod Authorized Worshipping Community in April 2021 both of these by approval from the IN-KY Synod Council.

In December 2020, Bishop Bill Gafkjen authorized Mr. Khai Cho as the Synod Authorized Minister (SAM) for MECI. Mr. Khai Cho was entranced into the IN-KY Synod Candidacy Process in August 2021 and soon after began his seminary education through TEEM (Theological Education for Emerging Ministries) at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary hosted by the IN-KY Synod.

Mr. Khai is currently finishing his internship and is moving toward approval as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in August. This active, vibrant, energetic faith community was welcomed into the IN-KY Synod and ELCA as an organized congregation during the Synod Assembly on June 7, 2024.

MECI is thankful for the gracious welcome by the people at the assembly.
