In the Old Testament, God commands that the Israelites harvest a "first fruit" every year and offer it to him. This means that the first food coming forth from the earth went to the Lord, not to the people.

This feast was designed to establish a greater trust in God - if you give over the first fruit to him, you need to trust that the rest of the harvest will be plentiful.

Today, we are encouraged to tithe, or give a tenth, to God and charitable organizations. St. Joseph's Catholic Church family, do we give the first tenth we receive each month? Or do we give from our excess? Consider offering up that first fruit to God to establish greater trust in him!

When you hear "St. Augustine," you probably think of the 5th-century bishop from North Africa. And for good reason: St. Augustine of Hippo is one of the most important saints in history, a profound theologian whose writings continue to shape the Church today (just ask Pope Leo XIV, a member of the religious order inspired by him).

But that St. Augustine isn't the only one. There's also St. Augustine of Canterbury, today's saint, who is worth celebrating in his own right. In 597 AD, he reintroduced Christianity to England after the fall of the Roman Empire. St. Augustine evangelized the Anglo-Saxons, purifying their practices and rituals when possible rather than abolishing them. Through his missionary work, England became a center of medieval Christianity.

Come celebrate the "other" St. Augustine today at daily Mass, Tuesday-Friday 8:00 a.m..

As was often the case, their story was fully told by their executioner, a man who later received baptism because he was so impressed by the courage of the men he killed. He sought out Pope Damasus and told him the story.

Pope Leo XIV has released his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, a major teaching document on artificial intelligence, human dignity, and life in a digital age. In it, he addresses everything from children’s use of smartphones and doomscrolling to autonomous weapons, algorithmic injustice, and why no machine can ever define what it means to be a person created in the image of God.
For a quick overview, here are 15 key quotes that capture some of its most important insights.

Let's join the Holy Father and Father Callistus Igwenagu that all might find joy in sports.

At his trial before the Roman prefect Rusticus, St. Justin debated with great skill and eloquence. But his most perfect witness was the shedding of his blood, in imitation of his Lord and for the benefit of the Church, including us here today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Pope Leo XIV personally came to the Vatican’s Synod Hall to present his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, a sign of how deeply he feels the Church must stand close to her children in this new age of artificial intelligence. In the same room, before the image of Peter’s tomb and under Mary’s gaze as Mother of the Church, tech leaders, cardinals, theologians, and diplomats listened together for the voice of the Holy Spirit in our time.

Like his predecessor Leo XIII in Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIV sees that our technologies are touching the deepest places of human life — work, war, family, even the hidden heart. He spoke of hearing the cries of those harmed by algorithms and weapons “beyond human reach,” and of his desire to listen to parents, teachers, and the poor before writing Magnifica Humanitas. Above all, he asked that artificial intelligence be “disarmed,” just as the Church has long worked for nuclear disarmament: stripped of logics of domination and made to serve peace and the God‑given dignity of every person.

Our Lady's month is almost over, but before it is, we want to know: what do you love about the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Perhaps it's a trait, like her humility or openness to God's will. Or maybe it's an action she took, like visiting her cousin Elizabeth when Mary herself was pregnant. Whatever it is, we want to know! So tell us in the comments below. We'll ask Father Callistus Igwenagu for his answer too!
