Adat Yeshua Synagogue provides religious education, spiritual guidance and social action for the New Orleans and surrounding areas by using the values and examples of the Tanakh (Torah, Prophets, Writings), Apostolic writings, along with Talmud, Commentaries, and other Jewish literature.

• As a Beit K’nesset (House of Assembly), we provide a Jewish space where all people can embrace Judaism and

Messiah. We encourage Jews to honor and uphold their Jewish Heritage. We facilitate Jewish growth through our programs and activities. We recognize that all people are created in the image of God and therefore deserve to be treated with dignity and respect, and we treat all people with loving kindness.

• As a Beit Tefilah (House of Prayer) we provide inspiring, quality religious services to allow members and non-members to pray and meditate using the Siddur. We encourage all people to develop a closer relationship to God.

• As a Beit Midrash (House of Study), we provide a foundation for understanding Judaism, Messiah, the Scriptures and Jewish life. We provide educational opportunities for all ages through our adult studies, children’s Shabbat school classes, and through the Mashal Learning Institute.

Fast of Tammuz
The Fast of Tammuz[1] (Hebrew: Shiv'ah Asar b'Tammuz, 17TH Tammuz) is a Jewish fast day primarily commemorating the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70CE. It falls on the 17th day of the Hebrew month of Tammuz, unless that date falls on Shabbat in a given year when it is deferred to Sunday.

It marks the beginning of the three-week mourning period leading up to Tisha B'Av, the fast of 9 Av. Like other minor fasts (i.e not Yom Kippur or Tisha B’Av) this fast begins at dawn (first light) and ends at nightfall (full dark).

Other significant events in Jewish history associated with 17 Tammuz include:

Moses breaking the tablets at Mount Sinai
The cessation, due to siege, of the supply of animals for offerings prior to the destruction of the First Temple
The placing of an idol in the Temple and burning of Torah scrolls by Roman soldiers
Attacks on Jewish communities in Toleda and Prague as well as the liquidation of the Kovno Ghetto
