Pleasant Valley Church Pleasant Valley Church is a vibrant and life-giving Seventh-day Adventist Church located in Happy Valley, OR.

Our vision is to be a congregation centered in giving glory to God for His amazing gift revealed in the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ. Our fellowship will connect people to Christ in a safe, welcoming family of believers, healing and discipling them for Spirit-led growth and outreach. We will actively share with our community the hope, peace and love we are finding in relationship with our soon-coming Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Some Christians have advocated throwing James into the heap of ancient literature and no longer considering this letter Scripture, and one big reason why is a passage like this one where James seems to say we're actually made right with God on the basis of what we do (“works”), not just of what we believe (“faith”). Is James an anti-gospel legalist?

At one time we were alienated from God---strangers, rebels, enemies---but God-in-Christ crossed the divide and closed the breach. Yet even that was not good enough for God. He wanted to be not just near us, not just among us, but to unite us with himself. And so he did!

Death is the enemy we all face. Jesus faced death, too, and He conquered it. He destroyed death, and it's personal for us--He conquered your death and mine! Praise God for what He has accomplished in Christ Jesus! We get to live free with confidence that Jesus has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

This debt far exceeds our ability to repay, and it shackles us to our past. ---except that Christ has secured our forgiveness, paid our debts, wiped the slate clean, and set us right. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

This week we continue exploring what has been finished in Christ by focusing on the reality of new life in Him. This isn’t merely a legal forgiveness, as though God hit the reset button on our records. In Christ we’ve been made brand new, and this new life is a different kind of creature. As we learn to identify with Jesus, our brother and King, we sink deeper into the freedom He has already won.

Our guest speaker this weekend is Bethani King, founder of On the Ground International (OTGI). Bethani’s passion for refugee work was forged through hands-on experience — first volunteering in Lebanese refugee camps near the Syrian border in 2016, then serving on a boat landing crew and in children's programs for Afghan refugees on the Greek island of Lesvos in 2018.

Moved by the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, she traveled to Colombia to assess the need firsthand, and what she found inspired her to build a bridge between global donors and the local organizations doing quiet, vital work on the ground. Bethani will share how she has learned to trust God even when He leads her into places the world would call unsafe.
