Pleasant Valley Church Pleasant Valley Church is a vibrant and life-giving Seventh-day Adventist Church located in Happy Valley, OR.

Our vision is to be a congregation centered in giving glory to God for His amazing gift revealed in the everlasting gospel of Jesus Christ. Our fellowship will connect people to Christ in a safe, welcoming family of believers, healing and discipling them for Spirit-led growth and outreach. We will actively share with our community the hope, peace and love we are finding in relationship with our soon-coming Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Word from the Wise: Friendly Fire

This Sabbath we’ll be in James 4, where James diagnoses our external conflicts as symptoms of an internal battle. What would it look like to have undivided loyalty—heart and hands, inside and out—to this God who gave all of Himself to us? Is it even possible? Let’s worship together this weekend in humility with grateful hearts that are wide open to the Holy Spirit’s examination of our loyalties.

Word from the Wise: Wisdom of the Heart

There’s having all the correct ideas, and then there’s having a correct heart, and James points out that one does not necessarily lead to the other. In fact, according to James, there’s a version of knowledge and wisdom that’s downright demonic! If we have to choose between being right in our understanding and right in our character, there’s no contest: character should lead the way every single time.

Language is spiritual, and words are powerful. James just finished telling us that our faith should be alive with good works, and he now makes clear that good speech is an essential good work in the life of the believer. The standards are high (too high?), but so are the stakes!

Some Christians have advocated throwing James into the heap of ancient literature and no longer considering this letter Scripture, and one big reason why is a passage like this one where James seems to say we're actually made right with God on the basis of what we do (“works”), not just of what we believe (“faith”). Is James an anti-gospel legalist?

At one time we were alienated from God---strangers, rebels, enemies---but God-in-Christ crossed the divide and closed the breach. Yet even that was not good enough for God. He wanted to be not just near us, not just among us, but to unite us with himself. And so he did!

Death is the enemy we all face. Jesus faced death, too, and He conquered it. He destroyed death, and it's personal for us--He conquered your death and mine! Praise God for what He has accomplished in Christ Jesus! We get to live free with confidence that Jesus has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.

This debt far exceeds our ability to repay, and it shackles us to our past. ---except that Christ has secured our forgiveness, paid our debts, wiped the slate clean, and set us right. Now we live (and forgive) as people who are free.
