Transcribed from July 17, 2019 Night of Worship

Scripture: John 1:1-14

“This is a lighthouse unto the region that will be filled with the Light of Jesus Christ! ... And it will go out unto the region, and it will be filled with the Love of God, a living God. And it will shine forth the Love of God

by the power of His Holy Spirit. God will manifest His glory in this house! You will see people saved, you will see people delivered, you will see people healed, you will see lives changed, you will see people who were in darkness—that Light will call in people out of the darkness and bring them into a harbor of safe-keeping in this tumultuous world and the horrible things that are going on right now. This will be a place of Presence. This will be a place of the power of God. You will see healings and signs and wonders that have not been seen since the time of Jesus Christ. This is going to be a place of miracles. This going to be a place where the prodigals are going to come home, those that have been out—and they knew God at one time and they are now in the pigpens eating pea pods, and they’re going to be saying ‘surely in my Father’s house the servants are treated better than this.’ They are going to come into this house, and they’re going to be filled. And they’re going to come in with their heads hanging down, full of shame—but they are going to be delivered from that! They’re going to healed. The Father is going to throw a robe of righteousness upon them and put on a ring of ownership. And there will be celebration! This shall be a house of jubilee! This will be a house where God is alive and well and present, and the Love of God will be manifest. This is a lighthouse unto the region, and He will draw people from the north and the south and the east and the west. And they shall come, and there shall be an awakening and a great revival! God is about to shake things up, and all that can be shaken will be shaken. But His throne cannot be shaken, and we are His children because we believe in His Name!

Day starter…


“According to Your steadfast love, refresh me and give me life, so that I may keep and obey the testimony of Your mouth.” (Psalm 119:88)…More than 100 times in the Bible, God urges us to trust in Him because He’s the only one in heaven or earth who’s always faithful, true, and loving toward us. He never fails, and He never will. Then why are there those days when His words on the page seem to lie there flat, staring you in the face? The silence is deafening.

You aren’t alone. It’s been that way since the earliest pages of the bible, with men and women occasionally asking “why?” and “where are You?” and “when will You comfort me?” (vs. 82), and getting no answer. We can speculate as to the why for the seeming silent treatment, but we should consider that everyone in scripture seemed to come to the same conclusion: “I am worn out waiting for Your rescue, but I have put my hope in Your word.” (vs. 81).

Jesus asked the disciples if they wanted to walk away like everyone or stick it out, and in times of silence, it’s good to remember Peter’s response: “Lord, to whom shall we go? You alone have words of eternal life—You are our only hope!” (John 6:68) Charles Haddon Spurgeon once said, “My hope lives not because I am not a sinner, but because I am a sinner for whom Christ died; my trust is not that I am holy, but that being unholy, HE is my righteousness. My faith rests not upon what I am or shall be or feel or know, but in what Christ is, in what He has done, and in what He is now doing for me. Hallelujah!” Whether we’re experiencing days of revelation or silence, let’s be going…

“With Your very own hands You formed me; now breathe Your wisdom over me so I can understand You.” (Psalm 119:73)…R.C. Sproul once said, “If God is the creator of the entire universe, then it must follow that He is Lord of the whole universe. No part of the world is outside of His lordship. That means that no part of my life must be outside of His lordship.”

God, we need to hear this every morning.
To remember that with Your very own hands, You made all this beautiful world, the tiniest bit of it—and we get to live in it.
That Your faithfulness to us is seen every morning, if only we look—night ends, day begins, with Your very own hands, and all that You made gets a fresh start no matter what happened yesterday.
A fresh start for someone to know You maybe for first time—hallelujah!
A fresh start to know You more—and follow You more (no matter what).
A fresh start to know that the Maker of this jaw-dropping world has also made all of us “with Your very own hands”—never an assembly line, always hand-crafted, always for a purpose.

Awaken us to remember all that. And so as the psalmist pleads, help us not to go our own way today, but seek to follow You as Lord of all in any and every way. “Breathe Your wisdom over us so we can understand You” and follow You, and share You each step we take. So help us, God who made us. Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“I used to wander off until You disciplined me, but now I closely follow Your word.” (Psalm 119:67)…Ever since the garden of Eden, we’ve all had this bent toward wanting to go our own way. It’s the story of our salvation, and it’s still the story of our life as disciples. Our heart may want God’s way, but for one reason or another, our flesh screams louder—it wants the easy way, the more acceptable way, even the I’m-gonna-keep-my-mouth-shut-and-quietly-live-my life way.

Whenever we rebel in some fashion (and we will), let’s fight the temptation to dig in our heels and instead run to our Father’s arms…again, and again, and again, and again. He’ll never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), and like the story of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32), He’ll see us turning back even from a distance and run to meet and embrace us whenever we make the first move to come back to Him. To say, as the song “Run to the Father” goes, “And I feel this rush deep in my chest, Your mercy is calling out; Just as I am, You pull me in, and I know I need You now.”

Songwriter Matt Maher puts it this way: “When my kids get hurt they just run to my wife and I. They don’t stop or hesitate, they just run. And that’s a profound revelation of what it means to have a heart open to God, to be able to run to Him when we’re hurting. The other thing is, as a parent, that when I see my own child suffering, I run to them. I don’t wait for them to run to me. So even as I sing a song called “Run To The Father,” I’m really, in some ways, singing about the fact that God’s already run to me, and He’ll never get tired of me needing Him.” Thank the Lord, and let’s be going, again, and again, and again, and again…

Day starter…


“Lord, You are mine! I promise to obey Your words.” (Psalm 119:57)…This verse rings with affirmation from 1 John 3:1: “See how very much our Father loves us, for He calls us His children, and that is what we are!” Wow. But the psalmist and John are both telling us that desiring to obey God’s commands is not just for His kids. We were born again with a story to tell in some fashion.

How should we live this? It’s good to come up with some rules for the road, so that we don’t, as one writer puts it, “sit back, twiddling our thumbs and whistling our favorite tunes, while we wait for people who need the gospel to come to us.” Consider the words of the psalmist, with rules for the road in contemporary language…

Remember that your are God’s kid, and that carries more weight than you can imagine. (vs. 57)
People are watching—so trust your life’s path to God and follow hard after it. (vs. 58)
Keep seeking Him and His ways with all your heart—imperfections and all. (vs. 59
Be intentional—hurry and don’t delay to do what He says. (vs. 60)
Know that the world’s ways will tempt you to sin, but love them and stand strong in His word. (vs. 61)
As you do, remember to give thanks to Him—He, and not your efforts, is worthy of it all! (vs. 62)
Don’t go it alone—surround yourself with loyal friends for encouragement and prayer. (vs. 63)
Every day, remember to look Up and all around you—the whole earth is full, FULL, of God’s lovingkindness and goodness, and He won’t stop now, or ever. (vs. 64)

Day starter…


“I meditate on your age-old regulations; O Lord, they comfort me.” (Psalm 119:52)…When Mary brought spices to Jesus’ tomb early in the morning, she was stressed by the event and had more inner turmoil when she discovered the empty tomb. “Lord, where are You?” Peter and John, also stressed out by the crucifixion, ran to the tomb and were filled with further inner turmoil when they learned Mary had been telling the truth. “Lord, where are You?”

One way or another, we’ve all been there. But in the midst of distress and confusion, Jesus brought comfort. In so many words, “Mary! It’s me. Risen just as I promised! Go and tell my brothers!” And in a completely different way, Jesus “spoke” comfort and revelation to Peter and John, and of John, the Word says, “he saw and believed—for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead.” (John 20:8-9).

No matter what kind of day we’re facing, we can always trust God’s Word to be a comforter to us that is beyond all comfort. It’s why the timeless Word should never be far from our thoughts—it’s always faithful and true, perfectly wise, always good, and one way or another, He’s always speaking to us as if we were Mary, Peter or John. “It is no small comfort that God hath written some scriptures to you which He hath not to others. Read these, and think God is like a friend who sendeth a letter to a whole house and family, but who speaketh His letter to some by name that are dearest to Him in the house.” (Samuel Rutherford) He still does, and He still will! Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“May I never forget Your words, for they are my only hope.” (Psalm 119:43)…Martin Luther once said, “God loves the doers of the Word in faith and love, and not the mere hearers who, like parrots, have learned to utter certain expressions with readiness.” We may chuckle at that, until we realize that that it’s too easy to be like a parrot. When reading this passage from Psalm 119, a better takeaway may be “no matter what.”

These words are a reminder to take all that we believe about the Word out of mere thought and put it into practice. To pray that we’ll be able today to “speak to kings about Your laws, and I will not be ashamed.” (verse 46). To pray that all that we’ve read and know and believe will come out our pores today, in all we do, say, and live.

Some words are comforting and encouraging, but others are a wake-up call for our own good. This is one of them. So…”what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops to many people.” (Matthew 10:27). No matter what…And “shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the Word of life.” (Philippians 2:16) No matter what…And “do not merely listen to the Word and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” (James 1:22) No matter what, so help us, God. Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“Make me walk along the path of Your commands, for that is where my happiness is found.” (Psalm 119:35)…This verse of contentment, faith and trust in God is exemplified in the life of Abraham (Genesis 12), who chose to “walk along the path” of His commands and, “By faith…obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going.” (Hebrews 11:8).

Although faith in God’s leading in our lives may not mean actually leaving one place to go to another, it continually challenges us to let go of what is familiar, safe, comfortable and practical, and, like Abraham, to follow Him instead, all the way “along the path of Your commands.” Where true “happiness is found.”

Today will likely present "trust Me" moments that are a mind-bending adventure, challenging every comfortable thought pattern, mindset, or habit that makes sense, and that wants to keep our finger on the control button. But Lord, help us to remember Abraham, and not just cheer on an old Bible story but actually follow his lead…in ways big and small. You are worthy of it all. Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“I lie in the dust; revive me by Your word.” (Psalm 119:25)…Around 4:30 this morning, a tiny area of rain formed in far northwestern Massachusetts. Nothing to pay attention to. Here, the morning air was (and in some cases is) stifling, inside and out. It felt like what the psalmist described as being “in the dust.” But by 6 a.m, that tiny area of rain had formed into a small area of heavy downpours—and it just so happened to fall on our area of New England. Windows opened. A time of great, if not miraculous, refreshing. Let it rain. No more lying “in the dust”…at least for a few hours.

We could say, “it’s just the weather,” and move on with our day. Or, we could pause, remember Who sends the weather, listen to the rain, breathe deeply, and remember instead words to a song: “Even when I don’t feel it, You’re working, even when I don’t see it, You’re working; You never stop working.”

In every emotion, whether high, low, exhausted, confused, or “in the dust,” our natural tendency is to lean on “me”—my circumstances, my feelings, and what I can see in the natural. Better, much better, is to listen to and be grateful for the rain, hold onto the Word every day to revive us, and remember that even when we feel “in the dust,” our God never stops working…
“I have chosen the way of truth…
I have set my heart on Your laws…
I hold fast to Your statutes…
I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.” (Psalm 119:30-32). Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“I feel like a stranger visiting here on earth. I need to know Your commands. Don’t keep them hidden from me.” (Psalm 119:19)…A pastor recently told of an outreach to youth in his community, and he used a simple booklet of drawings that told the story of Jesus. They seemed interested, but they had no clue what was going on, who Jesus was, or why He died by ancient torture. This was in the United States in 2026!

This is not an exceptional story, it’s shockingly normal. We are all swimming upstream with Jesus while the vast majority is going the other way, taking their cues for direction and life guidance from the news and from one another. It’s stories like this that can jolt us into realizing that we really do “feel like a stranger visiting here on earth,” but it can seem hopeless to try to fight the good fight.

But the psalmist cries, “No, I need to know Your commands. Don’t keep them hidden from me. Open my eyes to see what truly matters.” That’s what this pastor did. The rest of the story hasn’t been told, but if those blind youth are anything like us, one day, the Holy Spirit may grab one of them to want to know more. And then he or she will be an effective witness to their friends. God always seems to work that way! Don’t despair, don’t shake your head, don’t give up. Even though we’re only passing through this world, we can take someone along with us by daily saying, “God open my eyes today—I need to know Your commands.” We never know what might happen next. Let’s be going…

Day starter…


“I’m single-minded in pursuit of You…” (Psalm 119:10)…In our daily pursuit of God, what do we do with distractions? They’re everywhere, 24/7, and nonstop—in temptations, in prayers, in pursuit of Godly living. As Thomas Merton once said, “If you’ve never had any distractions, you don’t know how to pray.” Ain’t that the truth!

We may even wake up with a distraction in the form of a task that needs to (not wants to) be dealt with right away. Should we do it now, or should we focus on our time with God first? After all, Jesus says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:33).

If our heart’s desire is to have a focused time with the Lord “above all else,” without that distraction bugging us—and we mean what we say—then we can trust that He’ll meet us still. It’s good to remember that the Lord looks within our heart’s desires and intentions, not our circumstances or daily distractions. So Lord, keep our hearts pure and holy today, whatever distractions come our way. Help us to be “single-minded in pursuit of You” no matter what—and follow You and obey Your word.
