Psalm 127 reminds us that everything we build ultimately depends upon God’s blessing. Whether we are building a career, raising a family, serving in ministry, or pursuing any other goal, we should work faithfully without believing the results ultimately depend on us. Because God remains faithful even when we stop working, we can rest instead of being consumed by anxiety. And when God places blessings in our lives, we should recognize them as gifts to be received gratefully rather than achievements for which we take credit. Ultimately, the Christian life is one of working faithfully, resting trustfully, and receiving gratefully.

Psalm 124 asks a humbling question: Where would we be if the Lord had not been on our side? David looks back at Israel’s dangers and recognizes that their survival was ultimately not because of their strength, wisdom, or ability, but because God delivered them. The same truth applies to Christians today: sometimes God delivers us from trials, and sometimes He carries us through them, but in Christ our troubles never get the final word. Because Jesus has saved us, keeps us, and promises to bring us safely home, we can face suffering, Satan, and even death with confidence. Remembering God’s faithfulness in the past gives us reason to trust and praise Him for whatever lies ahead.

Reflecting on life's journey, David reminds us that our strength and salvation come from the Lord. If Christ hadn't saved, kept, and forgiven us, we'd be lost. But for believers, that's not our story. The Lord is on our side.

Every once in a while, a Christian will hear someone talk about the “fivefold ministry.” Maybe it comes up in a sermon, a book, a podcast, or a conversation with someone from another church. Sometimes the claim is that the reason churches are struggling today is because we have abandoned the biblical fivefold model.

The idea comes from Ephesians 4:11: “And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers” (Ephesians 4:11). Those are the five ministries that give the “fivefold ministry” its name.

At first glance, the argument sounds pretty straightforward. Paul names apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. Therefore, the church should have all five ministries today, right? But is that actually what Paul is saying? I do not think it is.
