After the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II by Mehmet Ali Ağca in 1981, the future saint forgave his would-be assassin from his hospital bed, only four days after the shooting that nearly took his life.

Later, the pope went to visit Ağca in prison, and the two spoke for more than 20 minutes.
⁣
Since that time, John Paul’s example has stood as a witness to the power of God at work in us; the strength to forgive, it is clear, comes not from ourselves, but from the Lord.
⁣
Our willingness to receive God’s grace and to extend forgiveness to others offers a powerful witness to the goodness of God, who is “kind and merciful, slow to anger and rich in compassion.”

REMINDER: Faith Formation Registration is Open AND BEGINS TOMORROW, September 13th at 9:00 AM with parent and student orientation in the cafeteria. Children may begin attending in Pre-K and continue through Confirmation.
⁣
Please remember that all students must be re-registered each year, even if they participated last year. When registering, select the grade your child will be entering for the 2026–2027 school year. Families who have already submitted Sacramental Certificates do not need to submit them again.
⁣
We are also blessed to offer a Support class for children who may need additional support in their faith formation. Children are welcome to participate independently or alongside a parent or guardian.

The Bible and the liturgy were made for one another. That statement would have seemed self-evident to the apostles and Church fathers. Prior to the printing press, people did not so much read the Scriptures as absorb them, mostly in the Mass. The Mass itself is a stunning compendium of scriptural texts, and it has always included extended readings from both testaments.
⁣
In the early Church, the Bible was considered a liturgical book, but the connection goes back even further than that. For the scriptural texts themselves presume the context of the Mass. The apostles and evangelists seem to be writing with liturgical proclamation in mind.
⁣
If we read the Bible as they wrote it, we'll read it from the heart of the Church. And that heart is Eucharistic. It is the heart of Jesus.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony
On Friday, September 11, our community will gather to remember and honor the lives lost in the tragic events of September 11, 2001, and to recognize the first responders and all those who answered the call to serve.
Please join us at Whiting City Hall as we come together in remembrance on the 25th anniversary of September 11th.
Friday, September 11, 2026
Beginning at 8:55 AM
Whiting City Hall
The ceremony will include the ringing of church bells, the National Anthem and flag raising, music from the Whiting High School Band, a blessing from Fr. Greg, remarks from Mayor Steve, and the placement of a memorial wreath by our Police and Fire Chiefs.
Following the ceremony, all are invited to gather on the third floor of City Hall for refreshments.
May we never forget those whose lives were lost, those who ran toward danger to help others, and the families and communities forever changed by that day.
We remember. We honor. We pray.
