This Earth Day, spend some time appreciating “The World Outside” -- which is the title of this 1957 photograph from the Religious News Service collection at the Presbyterian Historical Society.

This is the Babson Globe, located on the Babson College campus in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The globe weighs 25 tons and has a diameter of 28 feet! When it was built in 1955, it was the world’s largest rotating globe. The Unisphere, symbol of the 1964 New York World’s Fair, was the biggest of them all – its diameter being 120 feet – but it did not rotate. In the 1990s, a 33-foot-wide rotating globe was built in Italy that took first prize for size, until Maine’s moving planet, Eartha, joined the scene in 1998.

The globe was the founder’s idea. In the first years of its existence, Roger Babson’s globe attracted thousands of visitors to Wellesley each year. By the 1970s, however, it had fallen into disrepair – the porcelain-baked steel tiles that covered it fell off around 1984, and the machinery that made it spin stopped working around the same time. When, in 1988, the administration of Babson College decided the globe would be demolished, a committee was formed by students and faculty to raise funds for its restoration. The globe was restored in 1993, and then again in 2018.

The caption that goes along with this RNS photo is a reference to Psalm 57 verse 5: “Let thy glory be above all the earth.” Happy Earth Day!

Last year, the Rev. Dr. John Lewis published “Discernment in the Early Church and Today: Reclaiming God’s Vision for Formation and Community Building.” Lewis stopped by the “A Matter of Faith: A Presby Podcast” virtual studios recently to discuss the early church with podcast hosts Simon Doong and the Rev. Lee Catoe. Read more about their conversation here:
