So we're supposed to rest on the Sabbath. Does that mean sleeping all day? It might sound good at first, but it would definitely get boring pretty quickly.

God doesn't call us to nap. The rest He invites us to experience is from work. From stress. From worry. From fear. From believing or feeling like we need to do all and be all. To stop striving and start worshipping.

Keeping the Sabbath can include going to church, enjoying time connecting with family and friends, breathing deep outside in creation, and experiencing the joy of serving others.

Do you feel the pressure to do more and be more? Expectations at work, home, relationships? The pressure to juggle it all, at the same time, and do it all well?

That may be what the world wants us to believe, but it's not what God wants.

He invites us to rest. He created the Seventh-day Sabbath at the beginning of the world as a gift to us. He loves us and knew how much we would need this boundary: a day to just be. To be reminded that we are loved.

Different translations say it different ways:

"Be still and know that I am God."
“Be still and know (recognize, understand) that I am God."
“Cease striving and know that I am God."
“Stop fighting, and know that I am God."
Our God says, "Calm down, and learn that I am God!"
"Be in awe and know that I am God."

Different ways of saying the same thing. Stop. Know.

It was so important to God for us to stop and know, that He created the Seventh-day Sabbath at Creation. Sanctified it. Blessed it. Set it apart from the rest of the week. Invites us to step away from work, stress, worry, burdens, etc., and worship. Praise. Give thanks. Gather with other believers — and encourage one another.

A study published in 2012 showed that the real benefit of taking time off was “detachment” from work…not just not working.

The study showed the importance of not thinking about work, worrying about work, planning for work, etc. It revealed that people who “experience more detachment from work during off-hours are more satisfied with their lives and experience fewer symptoms of psychological strain.” True, intentional rest reduces stress.

God knew that when He created the Sabbath. He knew we needed more than a break; we needed REST. So He created the Sabbath and invites us to worship, renew, recharge, reconnect, and rest from our work to remember His work.

Webster's Dictionary defines "Sabbath" as a time of rest. The Bible says God established the Sabbath when He finished creating the world and began enjoying creation and time with Adam and Eve. The Sabbath is an invitation to rest and enjoy time with Him--to stop doing and rest in being: being loved, created with purpose, wanted for relationship.

You've probably seen t-shirts that say, "Just breathe." It's a reminder to stop, take a breath, and rest for a moment in this crazy, busy, rushing, multitasking, scrolling life.

God knew we'd need to breathe--and breathe deep. So He gave us the Seventh-day Sabbath. It was a gift at creation designed as a moment to "just breathe." To take in the beauty of nature. The power of worship and praise. The strengthening of prayer. The encouragement of other believers. And the quiet calm reassurance that a loving God is in control--and we don't need to worry or fear.
