Join us on June 29, 2026 at 6:00 for a Despacho earth honoring ceremony!

The ceremony is used to express gratitude, manifest intentions, heal emotional or physical illness, and bring individuals or communities back into balance. Similar to a mandala or sacred art, a despacho holds symbolic elements and the wishes of the participants who created it. It’s a living prayer which creates a palpable energy that helps bring healing, grace and manifestation of the prayers it contains. Attendees are invited to bring biodegradable, natural symbolic items to contribute to the Despacho. We will have a fire afterwards. See the attached description and video for additional information.

Despacho Ceremony

An Inca despacho ceremony is a sacred ritual from the Andean (Quechua) spiritual tradition of Peru. It’s an offering of gratitude, balance, and intention made to Pachamama (Mother Earth) and the Apus (mountain spirits).

The despacho is used to:

Give thanks for blessings received

Ask for guidance, healing, or protection.

Restore balance and harmony (called ayni, sacred reciprocity)

Mark transitions (birth, death, marriage, new beginnings)

What a Despacho Is:
It’s a carefully assembled bundle of symbolic items, each placed with intention and prayer.

Common elements include:

Paper or cloth base (often white)

Coca leaves (prayers, communication with spirit)

Flowers, seeds, grains (life, fertility, abundance)

Sweets or sugar figures (joy, sweetness in life)

Shells (water, emotions)

Fat or candles (energy, transformation)

Personal offerings (hair, written prayers, small symbolic items)

Open-ended Poem:
Today’s poem is a small reflection about the quiet things that often become the most lasting parts of our life. The poem isn’t finished, and as usual, I invite you to add your own words to complete it.

Often, we spend our lives
gathering things that glitter,
believing they will protect us
from emptiness or sorrow.
Meanwhile, life keeps offering
its quiet miracles.
Someone sitting beside us
when the world has fallen apart.
Unexpected kindness.
A hand reaching back for ours
when we thought we were alone.
Compassion appearing softly
in the exact moment it is needed most.
A moment of silence shared
with another human being.
Years pass,
and it is often these moments
that continue glowing inside us,
long after possessions lose their names.
Maybe the true measure of a life is …

…your turn (please add a few lines in the comments to complete the poem).

Sunday Service
Please join us for church this Sunday, May 24, at 10:30am. Our speaker will be john
Snodgrass, whose sermon topic will be “Dr. Jeckyl and Mrs. Hydra.” What would this ancient
mythical monster, the Hydra, say to us today? And might we be more inclined to take its side
against the brawny patriarchal hero of the old tale?
