The Halifax Union Society is an independent, non-denominational church in Halifax, VT. The Society’s inclusive, neighborly atmosphere and its peaceful hilltop setting have appealed to a diverse group of local residents, summer residents, and visitors since 1891. This year, bi-weekly Sunday evening services will begin on June 23 and will continue through September 1. Special guest pastor Jon Heyden

Rev. Bert Marshall returns to lead our service this Sunday, August 16, at 5PM.

Rev. Marshall has diverse experience in Congregational ministry and charitable leadership that followed previous experience as a farmworker, rock musician, innkeeper, and tractor-trailer driver. He is an inspired storyteller whose original music is deeply felt. His services here have been highlights of recent years.

Coming this Sunday, July 19 at 5PM: Jane Wohl leads a Flower Communion Ceremony. This ceremony, originated by a Czech Unitarian minister, aims to create a feeling of shared community for people of all spiritual backgrounds and experiences. Versions of the ceremony have been celebrated for over 100 years, primarily in Unitarian Universalist churches. Everyone is welcome to join in. Jane taught English composition, literature and creative writing at the college level for over 30 years before pursuing her M Div degree at Union Theological Seminary. This will be her first time leading an event for us. A social hour will follow.

Coming this Sunday, July 5, at 5PM: Brandeis Professor Ramie Targoff discusses Women at Prayer Under Henry VIII: A Quiet Revolution.

Based on her deep research into the historical record, Dr. Targoff will speak about two revolutionary changes to worship in the English church during the English Reformation in the early 16th century and how these helped to empower women in Renaissance England.

This is the second in a series of secular programs that draw upon the depth and diversity of experience within our community.

A social hour will follow the talk.

We are focusing on the Crosier family this Sunday, June 21, at 5.

Paul Crosier, son of Larry Crosier, will discuss the Crosier family history in Halifax with special appreciation for Larry. Two Crosier brothers were the original settlers of Halifax. Their descendants have lived here and in surrounding towns ever since. Larry Crosier was born in Halifax Center, lived here his entire life, joined the Union Society as a child, and was a faithful steward of our grounds and other nearby properties.

This is the first of a series of secular (non-religious) programs the Society will present to feature the depth and strength of our community. All are welcome to attend. There will be a social hour following the program.

We will still gather this Sunday, June 7 at 5 PM in the manner of a Quaker meeting, which will include silent meditation, prayer, and listening to those who are moved to speak. Then we'll have a social hour with refreshments.

Our 2026 program aims to provide inspiration for daily living and a sense of community for people who have gained from a variety of traditions and practices. Put us on your calendar for bi-weekly gatherings starting on June 7. All events will begin at 5PM and will be followed by a social hour at 6.

This year's schedule:

June 7 and 21: Rev. Jon Heydenreich leads services that focus on mindfulness in daily living.

July 5: Brandeis University Professor Ramee Targoff discusses the influence of women on religious practice during the English Reformation.

July 19: Jane Wohl leads a Flower Communion service. Bring a flower to share.

August 2: Wildlife photographer and edible forager Dara Carleton leads a program focused on reverence for nature.

August 16 and 30: Rev. Bert Marshall focuses on the role of religion in civic life.

The Halifax Union Society will gather on June 7 for our opening service led by Jon Heydenreich, Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Brattleboro and Mindful Minute columnist for the Brattleboro Reformer. After the service, we'll share conversation and some locally baked treats.

We look forward to welcoming pastor Jon on June 7 and again on June 21.

This is our 135th year of inviting people from multiple backgrounds to gather together in a common search for wise perspective and guidance. The only requirement for participation is mutual respect for each individual's spiritual path. We hope you will join us.

Additional gatherings are planned for July 5th and 19th and August 2nd, 16th, and 30th. Stay tuned for more announcements soon.
