4. Come and See
Series: Everything I Have Commanded You: Learning to Live as Disciples of Jesus
Today’s Teaching:
When two disciples began following Jesus, He turned and asked them, “What do you want?” Their answer was simple: “Rabbi, where are you staying?” Jesus replied, “Come and see.” This invitation is gentle, but it is also deeply important. Jesus does not begin by overwhelming them with explanations. He invites them to come near, spend time with Him, and discover who He is. Discipleship cannot remain distant curiosity. It requires nearness. Many people know something about Jesus, but Jesus invites us to come close enough to know Him personally. “Come and see” is an invitation to listen, observe, remain, and learn. These disciples spent the day with Jesus, and that day became the beginning of a changed life. This teaches us that faith often grows through time spent in the presence of Christ. We may not begin with every question answered. We may not understand everything Jesus will later ask of us. But we can still respond to the invitation to come and see. We come by opening His Word. We come by listening to His teaching with humility. We come by bringing our doubts, hopes, fears, sins, and needs before Him. This command also shapes the way we invite others. Andrew went and found his brother Simon and brought him to Jesus. A disciple who has come to see Jesus naturally wants others to meet Him too. The invitation is not manipulative or forceful. It is simple and honest: come and see for yourself. If we want to live as disciples of Jesus, we must keep returning to Him, not merely to religious activity about Him. The life of discipleship begins and continues with this gracious invitation from Christ.
Key Bible Verse:
“Jesus replied, ‘Come and see.’ It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.” — John 1:39, NLT
Prayer:
Father, thank You for the invitation to come near to Jesus. Help me not to be content with distant knowledge or casual interest. Teach me to spend time with Christ through His Word, through prayer, and through obedient trust. Open my heart to see His mercy, truth, holiness, and love more clearly. Use my life to invite others to come and see Him too. In Jesus’ name, amen.
