At a time when the Southern Baptist Convention has voted to formally ban women pastors, sending a message that only men should lead, we are reminded how far we still have to go for justice and equity in the church.

The United Church of Christ has a long history of advocating for women’s ordination and leadership, but our work is not done. Justice for women is not just a church issue—it’s a matter of faith and public witness.

As Rev. Dr. Karen Georgia A. Thompson writes, “The church must continue to be bold and courageous, finding and addressing the prophetic witness.”

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well (Psalm 139:14).”

A Prayer for Pride Month

Holy One,
As we enter into this LGBTQ+ Pride Month
We celebrate the brilliant diversity of Your creation.
All imago dei, in your image.
All fearfully and wonderfully made.
All in the arc and covenant of the rainbow.
Reflecting Your love for all.

Open our hearts anew O lord
To hear and affirm the voices of all Your children.
May we realize a world where
Every voice is heard,
Every person is seen,
Every soul is valued,
And everyone is loved.

We especially lift to You today our transgendered siblings
In this time when they are facing
A resurgence of persecution and violence.
May they find strength in their identity and courage in their truth.
Surround them with Your protection,
And enable them not only to survive but thrive in this world.

We remember to You both in grief and gratitude
The memories of those we knew and loved
Who lost their lives to AIDS.
May their spirits continue to inspire us,
And may their legacy guide us,
Toward a future filled with hope and compassion.

We give thanks for the saints who have gone on before us
And who rest in Your arms from their labors: Marsha P Johnson,
Sylvia Rivera, Bayard Rustin, Audra Lorde, James Baldwin,
Matthew Shepard, John McNeill, Edie Windsor, Larry Kramer,
And so many others on whose shoulders we stand.
In their honor, may we strive for a world
Where everyone can be and express their true selves
Without fear of rejection, exclusion, or persecution.

May we find the strength and courage
To stand against homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism,
Injustice and hatred in all its forms.
May we advocate for the equality and dignity of all Your children,
Loving all because all are Beloved.

Lord, bless us with your Holy Spirit
Empower us to create a world
Where every individual can walk proudly in their truth.
May our hearts be open, may our voices be bold,
And may our actions reflect the boundless manifestations of Your love,
As we walk together in faith and pride.

We pray this through the one who shows the way to Your Love
Jesus Christ. Amen
