Join our Blessing of Animals worship this coming Sunday, Aug. 30. 10am. Enjoy the poem on birds.

Words like birds
Like ordinary garden variety
birds around the house,
and, like them, often
in the early morning,
words sometimes sing to me.
Not obscure, Latinate ones,
but plainer ones, the robins,
and sparrows of language,
words about the senses,
and what they teach,
words about the importance
of daily, domestic life:
the well-made nest,
a luscious worm,
gratuitous crumbs,
the launching of fledglings
from the nest’s safety
into a dangerous world.
Like the warbling wren
who lives in the eaves,
who, as I do, rises early,
some simple words carry
a symphony of meaning
in a tiny puff of sound.
