Did Gabriel echo the final promise in Malachi?
Malachi 4:5–6 promised that Elijah would come before the day of the Lord and turn hearts. When Gabriel announced John the Baptist’s birth, he used that same language: John would
go before the Lord ‘in the spirit and power of Elijah,’ turn hearts and prepare a people for Him (Luke 1:16–17).
Luke does not present John as Elijah reincarnated; he presents John as fulfilling Elijah’s prophetic role. Jesus later
confirmed the connection while also recognizing that people could refuse it (Matthew 11:13–15; 17:10–13).
The Old Testament closes looking for a messenger. Luke opens by announcing that the messenger is coming—and that the
Lord is near.
Read Malachi 4 and Luke 1 together this week. What changes when you hear Gabriel’s words against Malachi’s promise?
