There's value in consistently talking with your kids about your family’s values. Kids begin to shift from extrinsic motivators to intrinsic ones when you, as a parent, communicate why a task or behavior is important to the family as a whole.

When a kid understands they’re a part of something bigger than themselves, your family’s value system becomes their personal value system.

What value have you been focusing on instilling in your kids lately?

We all have bad parenting days when tempers are high and patience is short. Days when our kids seem to know exactly which of our buttons to press. There are a lot of things we are as parents, but we aren’t infallible, we aren’t invincible, and we aren’t perfect. And that’s OK. If you're having a bad parenting day today, here's how to salvage it.

The world is full of critics, and your kids are destined to meet them. One of them doesn’t have to be you. Yes, we want our kids to grow up to be kind, loving, and responsible adults. There is a way, though, to impart all we’re meant to teach them without being hurtfully critical.

What our kids need most? They need a cheerleader. They need a hype man and hype woman. They need someone to be happy to see them succeed and cosign their “crazy” ideas. Be that person for your kids.

Our kids are going to mess up. Sometimes, it’ll be in small ways. Others, not so small. Sometimes, our kids are going to mess up so monumentally that it takes our breath away.

Before you throw up your hands and count it all as a lost cause, pause. Yes, it may be too late to keep them from crossing certain lines. But your reaction may be the very thing that keeps them from crossing certain lines again.

When we think about our kids developing new skills or habits, we often think their growth will happen on a linear path. Only, humans rarely operate that way.

In the short-term, we’re up and down, back and forth, around and around. But, over time and with the right encouragement and motivation, we all move toward growth.

Think about it this way—the best farmer in the universe has to stare at barren soil for a season. So, if you’re feeling disappointed or frustrated, give yourself and your kid a little grace.

You can’t see what you can’t see. And next season could very well be your season of harvest.

In middle school, preteens challenge authority and personalize what they believe. In these phases, the relational questions shift from black-and-white to gray. The answers are no longer the same for every kid, so they need to be personalized.

One way to help a middle schooler in this phase is to affirm their personal journey. Your seventh and eighth graders want to know, "Who am I?" When we acknowledge their positive qualities and strengths, they discover their own uniqueness.

For many of us, multitasking is our superpower—we can wash a load of laundry, make the kids' lunches, feed the dog, referee sibling squabbles, and help with homework simultaneously.

But although we can accomplish a lot, it doesn't mean we always should. We were not created to constantly operate at full speed. In the midst of life’s demands, we must find a quiet space in time to breathe. There will be consequences when we don't.

So, what small thing can you do today to step away from your current pace? Seriously, take a moment right now and think about it. Now, write your responses in the comments.

Despite all the knowledge, love, and wisdom we impart to our kids throughout their lifetimes, they are bound to make choices that counter all we've shared with them. And do you know what we say to that? Your kid's choices and mistakes often don't reflect the type of parent you are.

We can teach them everything we know and more, but at the end of the day, they are humans with free will and will slip up every now and then—and hopefully learn from those mistakes. It's easy to think any unwise decisions our kids make are an indictment against our ability to parent them well. We just want to remind you today that you are not your kid's mistakes and you are exactly the parent your kid needs in this phase they're in.

Raise your hand if you didn’t learn the best way to communicate when you were growing up. ✋

Our guess is most of you, like us, emphatically raised your hands. No matter what generation you were raised in, we’re willing to wager you didn’t always see what healthy communication looked like.

Now that we have kids of our own, we have a great opportunity to teach our kids what healthy communication looks like.

It’s open.
It’s not judgemental.
It gives equal chances for everyone to share.

Just think of the impact this will have on generations to come when we do this well. The possibilities are endless. What are some ways you model healthy communication in your home?

One of the secrets to forgiving others is learning how to be forgiven. Everyone needs forgiveness from time to time. And do you know what our kids need? They need to see us not only forgive, but ask to be forgiven.

So, did you lose your cool with your kid yesterday? Ask for forgiveness. Did you go back on your word because it was convenient? Ask for forgiveness. When your kids see you admitting your mistakes and asking for forgiveness, it models to them what they should do when they find themselves in a similar situation, too.

The stories a kid hears and experiences over time helps to shape and mold them. This goes for the stories we share with them about ourselves, our families, and even stories about them. Take some time this week to share a story with your kid—it could be meaningful, silly, or somewhere in the middle. Just remember that stories over time matter, especially when they come from a parent who cares.

It's all too easy for us to make rules more important than relationship—it’s in the tone of our voice, our body language, and our eyes. If we're not careful, our expressed disappointment about our kids' behavior can be translated to us rejecting who they are. The truth is, our kids will always challenge the rules and debate our reasoning, but we should strive to parent them in a way that leaves no questions about how much we love them.
