THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG: It’s Time to Connect

"As church leaders, we repeatedly hear about how important it is for people to feel connected to the people of their church. We will never forsake the gathering of Sunday morning worship, or lessen its importance, but the connection piece largely happens through different ministry opportunities. Sunday morning worship is self-described. We have gathered to worship the Lord, the one who is worthy of all honor, glory and praise. Sunday morning worship is all about that vertical connection between us and God. Some fellowship and connection happens then, but most of our connection grows much deeper through different opportunities for Spiritual growth like Wednesday Night Ministries, Pulse Groups, Small Groups and Adult Bible Fellowship classes."

THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG: A Tribute to Dad

"My dad, Dick Barnes, went to be with the Lord 29 years ago, on August 29, 1997. I miss my dad and think about him often, but I admit I get more contemplative as August 29 rolls around each year. What you cannot see are the tears flowing down my cheeks as I write this. I used to say that my mom declared August 29 a new national holiday – and if at all possible I made the trip to Canton, Ohio, to see her on that day. (I had known intellectually the importance of the anniversary of a death, but I learned it experientially every year for the 24 years my mom remained on this earth.) My mom and dad had 45 years of marriage, and would have been married 74 years this August 2. Absolutely no judgment on people who remarry after their spouse dies – God bless them. Our mom never looked at another guy for the rest of her life."

THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG: Leave a Legacy

"This week we had the memorial service for Kirk Olney. He was a wonderful man of God, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and long time elder of Madison Christian Church. You could see the legacy that was left with his wonderful family there, friends from all over the place, and a church that he helped to start. It is okay for us to be sad that he has passed. It is okay to be glad that he is no longer in pain. But it is not okay to forget why he has such a wonderful legacy."

THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG: How Do We Want To Be Known?
"How do you want to be known? I think about that question often, and it is pretty important to me. Personally, I want to be known as a guy who loves Jesus, loves my family, and loves the church. (I am not so naïve that I fail to realize some probably do not have nearly such positive impressions of me.) It is also important how a church – how our church – is known in the community. (Once again, not naïve here. I know there will always be detractors). Here are a few examples from my own personal experience of how our church is viewed in our community."

THIS WEEK ON THE BLOG: Jesus is Alive

"There is a social media trend right now with people trying to replicate a song by Forrest Frank called, “Jesus is Alive.” Forrest Frank has such a great talent with music that he is being listened to by more than just Christians, but his lyrics are absolutely Christian. Heather and I were on a date the other day and we heard Forrest Frank in the Polaris mall playing over the main speakers in a common area. I was surprised, but she wisely pointed out that his music is popular enough that some people are listening to it that we might not expect. We can simply be thankful that God is using his platform to introduce people to Jesus. He has found a wonderful way to use his God-given talent to draw attention to Jesus. Here is the link to the song in the current social media trend. We can all celebrate and praise Jesus that he is ALIVE!"
