What do we do when even Jesus’ first response makes us uncomfortable?

In this week’s Gospel story, a desperate mother comes to Jesus begging for help for her suffering daughter. But Jesus does not immediately respond with the compassion we expect. First, he is silent. Then he tells her his mission is to Israel. When she persists, his words become even harder to hear.

But she refuses to give up.

And something remarkable happens. The story presents even Jesus as stopping, listening, and thinking again—recognizing that God’s mercy cannot be confined by the boundaries we draw around it.

Who are we tempted to send away? Who have we decided is outside our responsibility, our compassion, or even God’s grace? And what might someone on the outside have to teach us about the faith we claim to believe?

This past Sunday, we were blessed to hear from our Cabell-Lincoln Workcamp participants as they shared stories and reflections from their week of service. Their experiences are a wonderful reminder of what can happen when we put our faith into action—serving others, building relationships, and sharing Christ’s love in tangible ways.
