Mauro Zaldivar Obituary

Waterford - Mauro Zaldivar passed away peacefully Aug. 28, 2026, at the age of 91, surrounded by the family he loved so dearly. Known as "Papi" to his children and "Papa" to his five grandsons, Mauro was the embodiment of devotion, hard work, humility and the American Dream. His journey with his beloved wife, Roselia, began 74 years ago in Cuba, eventually leading them to the United States, where together they created the family Mauro always called his greatest treasure.

Born June 27, 1935, in Holguín, Cuba, to Oscar Zaldivar and Bernarda Arencibia, Mauro's life changed when he met his beloved wife, Roselia, in church. In 1956, he left Cuba determined to build a better future for his family. Mauro and Roselia married in 1960, in Holguín, and soon began their life together in America.

Mauro built his family on love, sacrifice and quiet strength. For more than 45 years, he worked two jobs at Pfizer and Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, never complaining and always focused on providing opportunities for his family. He was always present for the people he loved, whether at a sporting event, school activity, family celebration, or simply sharing a meal and a story.

Mauro enjoyed bowling, collecting coins, watching action movies, and cheering for his Boston Red Sox. He was also a gifted cook, famous for his empanadas, filet mignon, black beans, and his signature lobster bisque. He loved hosting pig roasts and took great pride in bringing everyone together. When he wasn't cooking, he could often be found gardening or working on a new home project.

His love extended across generations and borders. Mauro stayed connected with relatives throughout Florida, Connecticut, Virginia, California, Spain, and Cuba and never missed an opportunity to support or celebrate them.

Mauro was proud of his family and the life they built together. He will be dearly missed by his daughter Rebeca (Frank) Dellaporta; son David (Denise) Zaldivar, grandchildren: Taylor (Kylen) Zaldivar, Christopher Dellaporta, David (Madison) Zaldivar, Joseph Dellaporta, and Michael Dellaporta; and great-grandchildren, Raegan and Logan. He is also survived by his siblings, David Zaldivar and Miriam Hausman; nieces, Elizabeth (Michael) Rogers and Bianca Zaldivar; cousins: Jeannette (Dennis) Woodworth, Mary (David) Guiher, Lilliana and Alcibiades Zaldivar, and Eduardo Arencibia; sister-in-law Crucita (Joaquin) Perez; and extended family.

He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Roselia Zaldivar; his parents, Bernarda Arencibia and Oscar Zaldivar; his sisters, Vilma Brown and Aida Zaldivar; his brother, Oscar Zaldivar; and niece Jennifer Zaldivar.

Mauro's legacy will live on through the family he built, the love he generously gave, and the countless lives he touched. He will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew and adored him.

Calling hours will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 3, at Thomas L. Neilan Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the same location. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Broad Street, New London.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and Groton Regency for the exceptional care and compassion provided during Mauro's final days.

Today’s luncheon was at “When Pigs Fly“ café on Rope Ferry Road in Waterford, Connecticut. Originally we had 21 people signed up. Within the last two days we had 10 cancellations at the last minute due to business conflicts, vacations, and iillness. And nine of the cancellations were our female attendees! So today we had 11, all MALE attendees for a fabulous lunch! The owners of this café serve fresh roasted turkey sandwiches, Ruebens, chicken, Deli and freshly baked specialty sandwiches. Our talkative group stayed about one and a half hours and we especially interested in what’s happening at Pfizer and many stories of vacations, business trips, and entrepreneurial pursuits. Until next month, have a great summer!

Dominick Luparella Obituary
Sarasota, Fla. - I can hear him now . . . "Ann!" On July 20, 2026, Heaven gained a brilliant problem solver and a man who loved his wife dearly. So much so, that everyone knows her name because he loved to say it. Dominick Anthony Luparella was born in New Bradwell, Wolverton Bucks, England June 11, 1945.

He served his country as a proud U.S. Marine and lived by the Marine motto throughout his life, Semper Fidelis or "Always Faithful." He was a proud American.

After his military service, he returned to his hometown, Carbondale, Pa., and fell in love with beautiful and spirited Ann Wilson. They were married April 11, 1968. Dominick and Ann made their home in Connecticut where he rose through the ranks at Pfizer.

They were always a team, working to save, making their home beautiful, supporting one another with intensity and connected through a deep love. Adversity arrived at their door a few times and together they worked through it.

When Dominick retired from Pfizer, they moved to Florida with the hope they would love it! They did! Once again, they created beauty in and

outside their home and enjoyed neighbors. True to form, Dominick managed the landscaping in his community and the outcome was stunning! He became an expert on plants and trees. His keen mind, perfectionism and creativity allowed him to manage the landscaping needs of the community with what looked like ease.

Ann cared for Dominick when his health declined with dedication and love. They maintain daily rituals like playing "bubbles," each saving the final move in the game for the other to complete. They loved to see each other win. Their relationship was truly a love story straight out of a novel.

Dominick's final resting place will be in Sarasota, Florida at Sarasota National Cemetery with military honors. Dominick is survived by his wife, daughter, grandchildren, sister, sister-in-law, niece and cousins.

"Thank you for your service, Dom and thank you for being a fiercely unique man."

A private service will be held for Dominick.

What to Know About the Building at Risk of Collapse in Manhattan

A high-rise Midtown Manhattan office building being converted to apartments showed signs of collapsing on Tuesday, prompting evacuations, street closings and an emergency response that disrupted the morning rush around Grand Central Terminal.

The Fire Department received a call about falling bricks near the building, 235 East 42nd Street, just before 8 a.m., officials said. The building, the former corporate headquarters of the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, is being transformed into a 1,600-unit residential property that one of its developers has said is the largest such conversion in the United States.

A safety manager at the building, which has 37 stories, reported on Tuesday that a steel beam on the 21st floor was compromised, city Buildings Department records show. Two support columns inside the building were buckling, and several upper floors were sagging, fire officials said.

Here’s what else to know:
Was anyone hurt amid the threat of a collapse?
There were no injuries, fire officials said. Construction workers were evacuated from the building, and workers were also cleared from adjoining properties at 225 and 221 East 43rd Street as a precaution, fire officials said.

Cliff Johnsen, the business agent for Steamfitters Local 638, said his union’s members were evacuated from 235 East 42nd Street after beams started to bend. “The north side of that building is crumbling,” he said. “I-beams are bending like ci******es in there.”

A “frozen zone” had been established from 40th Street to 45th Street and from First Avenue to Third Avenue as a further precaution, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a news conference.

What kind of work is being done at the building?
The former Pfizer headquarters — two buildings, 235 and 219 East 42nd Street, which were combined — is being turned into an apartment complex as part of a broader effort to use empty Manhattan office buildings to help ease the city’s housing crunch.

The project, a joint effort by Metro Loft and David Werner Real Estate, began in 2024 and had been expected to be finished next year. In addition to redesigning 235 East 42nd Street, the developers’ plans call for adding 11 stories to the existing 22 at 219 East 42nd Street, said the city’s buildings commissioner, Ahmed Tigani.

Four hundred of the planned 1,602 apartments were earmarked as affordable. The design also includes more than 100,000 square feet of amenities such as shops, a rooftop pool and a fitness center.

Metro Loft said in a statement that it was aware of problems with the building and was working with the Buildings Department to “understand the full scope of the situation.”

Lorraine Corr, 85 of Naples, Florida passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. Lorraine lived a life characterized
by kindness, service, and devotion to her family, friends and community. She will be remembered for her warmth, her sense of humor and her remarkable ability to bring joy and comfort to those around her.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John “Joe” Corr to whom she shared 60 years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family, faith, and enduring love.
Lorraine is survived by her cherished children, Suzanne Corr of Providence, Rhode Island, Geoffrey Corr (Kelly Egan) of Charlestown, Rhode Island and Sharon Corr of Westerly, Rhode Island and Naples, Florida. She is also survived by her brother Wayne “Buzz” Crandall of Englewood, Florida and Mickey (wife Rose) of North Kingstown, Rhode Island. Lorraine was a proud grandmother to Jacob Fernstrom, Meghan Fernstrom, Clark Califf and Janna Califf.
Lorraine enjoyed a distinguished career in Human Resources at Pfizer Inc. in Groton, Connecticut, where she was respected for her professionalism, integrity and dedication.
Following retirement, she devoted herself to service within her community. As a faithful member of Saint Mark‘s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, she served in many ministries, including the Altar Guild, Prayer Shawl Ministry and Saint Mark’s food pantry, Our Daily Bread. Lorraine was an avid reader and participated in many book clubs. She had a great appreciation for music and enjoyed being a part of Saint Mark’s bell choir.
A talented quilter and baker, Lorraine expressed her love through the gifts she created and shared with others. Her great passion for sewing led her to teach students at Manatee Middle School , where she inspired creativity, confidence, and appreciation for the art of sewing. Whether creating quilts or baking for family and friends, Lorraine approached every endeavor with warmth and enthusiasm.
Above all, Lorraine treasured her family. Her legacy is one of compassion, service, creativity, and unwavering love . Lorraine kindness and generosity will forever bear the imprint of her spirit.
A funeral mass will be at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, Florida at 11 AM on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Instead of wearing traditional black, the family invites attendees to wear a shade of blue to match Lorraine’s eyes.

Dale Mackay Obituary
Stonington - On May 27, 2026, Dale Carlton Mackay crossed over to the other side after a long journey with Alzheimer's Disease. Dale was born in New London, July 16, 1945, to George H. Mackay and Nellie Gilbey Mackay.

Dale married the love of his life, Diane Champlin Mackay, June 5, 1982, who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Holly L. Macmillan; a son, Timothy L. Mackay; a brother, Brian K. Mackay; and a sister, Sandra Powell; also, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Dale was predeceased by his parents; and his brother Gary Mackay.

Dale joined the U.S. Navy in 1966. He then joined Pfizer in 1970, and retired after 31 years. Dale was very active in Sub Vets until his illness prevented him from continuing. Dale loved family friends trips to Florida, Daytona 500 and watching his grandkids play ball. He loved cars and was a perfectionist, so his cars, his yard or anything he touched, looked like it was a photo in a magazine.

His greatest love was family and making people smile. . . . His kind heart and soul will be greatly missed.

A memorial for Dale will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 12, at The Pequot Chapel, 857 Montauk Avenue, New London, Burial will be private.

Tremendous thanks and appreciation go out to Dale's caregiver Nicole and Dale's Hospice nurses, Chuck and Danielle. Stonington - David S. Dresback, 82, formerly of Stonington Borough, passed away peacefully March 30, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born April 3, 1943, in Binghamton, N.Y., David was the beloved son of Grace and David Dresback.

David was preceded in death by his cherished wife, Sherry Dresback, with whom he shared a life filled with love, laughter, adventure, and unwavering partnership.

He is survived by his loving children, Jennifer Williams, Michael Dresback and his wife, Christy; and his beloved granddaughters, Alexa Williams and Ava Grace Dresback. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Melanie Lambert and her husband, Eric, and Mitch Buroker; as well as his step-grandchildren, Jake and Hayley Lambert, and Miles and Katherine Buroker.

David was a brilliant scientist and lifelong learner. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from the University of Michigan in 1967 and later completed his Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 1974. His remarkable career at Pfizer in Groton spanned 28 years, where he served as Senior Director before retiring in 2002. Even in retirement, his passion for innovation continued as he consulted for numerous startup pharmaceutical companies. Throughout his distinguished career, David was the author of numerous pharmaceutical patents and was highly respected for his intellect, creativity, and dedication to advancing medicine.

While his professional accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew David will remember him most for his vibrant personality and zest for life. He was a gifted guitar and harmonica player, known for his playful spirit, love of funny hats and glasses, and legendary sense of humor. A true prankster at heart, David brought laughter and light wherever he went. He loved to travel, embraced new experiences, and had a deep appreciation for exceptional food and culinary adventures. Above all, he treasured time spent with family and friends and lived each day fully and enthusiastically.

David's legacy is one of intelligence, humor, curiosity, kindness, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A private funeral was held in his honor.
