Sacred Heart Parish Ministry in Action!
On August 31 our Christian Service ministry along with our Life Teen High School Ministry joined forces to help those in need. We spent all morning going through large bins of donated used clothing. We sorted and hung them. Once on racks we wheeled them to the store room where there was a steady flow of people in need shopping for clothes. They do not charge for the clothing or food. We also sorted household goods, shoes and toys. Thank you to all the adults and teens who participated. Special thanks to core team members Andrea and Mary for driving us and for Terry Morreau for all you do.

It's World Beard Day! And what better way to celebrate than taking a look at what Sacred Scripture has to say about facial hair?
⁣
In the Bible, beards are a sign of dignity and maturity. In fact, Jewish priests were instructed to let their facial hair grow.
⁣
"They shall not shave their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor lacerate their bodies." -- Leviticus 21:5
⁣
And the Psalms reference beards in connection with the priesthood and blessing.
⁣
"Like precious ointment on the head, running down upon the beard, upon the beard of Aaron, upon the collar of his robes." -- Psalm 133:2
⁣
Shaving one's beard could be an expression of shame or lamentation. After the fall of Jerusalem to Babylon, Jeremiah noted the following:

"Everyone has shaved his beard, torn his garments, and gashed himself..." -- Jeremiah 41:5
⁣
The Bible doesn't explicitly say that Jesus had a beard, but it was the norm among Jewish men in the 1st century. Nonetheless, the New Testament shifts the focus away from external appearance to what's on the inside.
⁣
"Your adornment should not be an external one...but rather the hidden character of the heart." -- 1 Peter 3:3-4
⁣
So should Catholic men have beards today? It's increasingly more common. But while it can be a symbol of wisdom and maturity, one's character and virtue are truly what count.

St. Charles Festival - September 11-13, 2006
Everyone is invited to St. Charles Parish Festival located at 8109 Swan Creek Road in Newport. The festival has something for everyone including bingo, live music, kids' tent, food, refreshments, raffles and a religious booth.

Thursday, September 10 - Rummage Sale begins at 9:00 AM
Friday, September 11 - Lake Erie Fish Dinner at 5:00 PM and music at 4:00 and 8:00 PM
Saturday, September 12 - Steak Dinner at 5:00 PM and music at 1:00, 5:00 and 8:00 PM
Sunday, September 13 - Famous Chicken Dinner at 11:320 AM, Car/Tractor Show from 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM, and music at 12:00 and 2:00 PM. Raffles and Live Auction at 6:00 PM

September 15 - October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. And the Catholic Church in the United States has a lot to celebrate when it comes to our Hispanic community! About 36% of Catholics in the U.S. are Hispanic, a number that rises to a whopping 60% when we consider Catholics under the age of 18!

Here at Sacred Heart, we are grateful for the contributions and presence of all of our parishioners with roots in the Spanish-speaking world, and we encourage you to start making plans to celebrate today!

It's Parish Picnic Time!
Sunday, September 27 from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Food, fun and fellowship with your parish family! We'll have lots of great food and drinks and a variety of fun activities you can participate in with your family and friends.
The picnic starts right after the outdoor Mass (under a tent).
This is an all grades back-to-school Mass. Father Marc will have a gift for the kids and give a special blessing for the children, parents and Cathechists.
Come and enjoy Chicken, Hot Dogs, baked beans, french fries, assorted chips, cookies, ice cream and fruit. Water, coffee/tea and juice boxes will be served. Adult beverages will be available for a free-will offering.
There will be a K-Pop Concert, balloon designs and an inflatable obstacle course for the kids to enjoy.

Faith Formation Early Registration Extended!
We are extending early registration (tuition break) until Tuesday, September 8. As many of our families have registered for both faith formation and preparation for Sacraments, we ask that you do so in the next week. You will still be able to register after September 8 if you are unable to over the next week.
The Archdiocese of Detroit is changing our administration system later next week and it will help a great deal to get as many families registered in our old system as possible so we can have the best attendance lists organized in preparation for everything starting up!
