THE MIRACLE OF EASTER
Matthew 28:5-6: "But the angel said to the women, 'Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.'"
The crowning miracle in all of history is the resurrection of Jesus Christ, similar to but even greater than God’s creation of the world out of nothing. The Father gives eternal, resurrected life to His Son, who had given His life to achieve forgiveness of sins and everlasting life for us. According to St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 15, this is the miracle upon which our entire faith depends. Because Christ lives, we have something to believe. Because Christ lives, we have a faith that works. Because Christ lives, through faith in Him, we have the forgiveness of sins. Because Christ lives, those who died in the faith are now with Christ in heaven and have their own resurrection in store. Because Christ lives, we have a message to proclaim, for there is eternal “great joy” (Matthew 28:8) to be found in the miracle of Easter!

THE MIRACLE OF CHRIST’S DESCENT INTO HELL
1 Peter 3:18–19: "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison."
The Bible says that Jesus has the “keys of death and hades” (Revelation 1:18). (Hades is hell.) Jesus has the power to open and shut the doors of hell as well as the doors of heaven (Revelation 3:7). He has that power because God raised Him from the dead after He died for our sins, defeating the devil on the cross. After being made alive, but before stepping out of the tomb on Easter, Jesus descended into hell to destroy the power of the devil and declare His victory over sin and death (1 Peter 3:18–19; Colossians 2:15). Because of the miracle of Christ's descent into hell, hell’s prison cannot hold us. And Jesus will free from the grave all who believe in Him (Ezekiel 37:13). Likewise, Jesus has given His Church "the keys of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 16:19; Matthew 18:18). With the keys of the kingdom, which is the Good News of forgiveness, heaven is open to everyone who believes in Jesus, that we might live with God forever (John 20:23, 31)!

THE MIRACLE OF GOOD FRIDAY
Romans 5:8: "But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
The miracle of Good Friday is that Christ, the Lord of Glory, was crucified for us. Jesus took the eternal punishment for our sins. The Son of God Himself died the death we deserved. Why would Jesus do that? Because He loves us! From our human perspective, it’s crazy, unfair, and doesn’t make sense. Why would a good person like Jesus die for bad people like us? God doesn’t give us what we deserve for our sin out of love for us. Jesus died in our place and took the punishment for our sin. And because of Jesus’ great love for us, God forgives our sins. That’s the miracle of Good Friday.

THE MIRACULOUS IN HOLY COMMUNION
1 Corinthians 10:16: "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?"
God’s Word creates miracles. It does what it says. When God says it, it happens—as in creation. “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). And whatever God said, it was so. Now in the new creation Jesus says, “This is My body” and “This is My blood”—and they are! Some people doubt the miracle of the Lord’s Supper, but God’s Word does what it says. Jesus’ body and blood are there in, with, and under the bread and wine - because He says so. Eating Jesus’ body and drinking His blood forgive our sins - because He says so (Matthew 26:28).

THE MIRACULOUS FAITH OF THE ROMAN SOLDIERS
Matthew 27:54: "When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, 'Truly this was the Son of God!'"
The Lord is always confounding our expectations to show us that He is the God who justifies the ungodly, and that we do not justify Him by our religiosity. He does not send His Son in great power and glory as we would expect of God, but instead He comes to suffer and die in shame for the sin of the world on the cross. He does not use the influential, pious religious leaders of the Jews to confess who Jesus is at the cross, or even His own disciples. Rather God uses outsiders, “sinners,” a Gentile centurion and the soldiers with him, to make the great confession: “Truly this was the Son of God!”

THE MIRACULOUS RAISING OF THE SAINTS FROM DEATH
Matthew 27:52–53: “The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many.”
The most astounding miracle of Lent is the raising of the entombed saints. They were given life after Jesus’ death, but only after His own resurrection would they come out of the tombs and be seen in Jerusalem, the “holy city.” The Scriptures do not tell us who these saints were or what became of them afterward—whether they went into heaven or died again we don’t know! What we do know is that their appearance was a sign that witnessed to Christ’s own resurrection, and their anonymity tells us to focus all attention on Jesus and His Word, not on saints or speculations.

THE MIRACLE OF THE SPLITTING ROCKS
Matthew 27:51c: “And the rocks were split.”
The miracle of the splitting rocks brings to mind a major theme of the Old Testament: that the Lord (Yahweh in Hebrew, God’s personal name to Israel) is our Rock. Jesus’ death is the bedrock on which our Christian faith is built, and His resurrection crushes our enemies so that now “you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. In Him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit” (Ephesians 2:19–22).

THE MIRACULOUS EARTHQUAKE
Matthew 27:51b: “And the earth shook.”
Miraculous darkness covered the earth until Jesus died, and then God tore the curtain in the temple in two. The next miracle He performed was an earthquake that made the world tremble, showing that God had shaken up the entire cosmos by the death of Jesus for the sins of the world. The earthquake demonstrates God’s peace, wrath, greatness, presence, and final judgment, all brought to light by the death of His Son.

THE MIRACULOUS TEARING OF THE TEMPLE CURTAIN
Matthew 27:51a: “And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”
The only miracle during the Passion Narrative that God caused before the death of Jesus was the darkness over all the earth, which He sent to show the blackness of the world’s sin and His judgment upon that sin in His Son. As Jesus gave up His spirit, darkness gave way to light, and God performed subsequent miracles to show that He had accepted the sacrifice of His Son. The first miracle to follow Christ’s death, the rending of the curtain of the Jerusalem temple, was a decisive indication that the old covenant had given way to the New Testament in Jesus’ blood.

THE MIRACULOUS DARKNESS
Matthew 27:45: “Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.”
During Lent, we remember that everything in Christianity hangs together on the cross of Calvary. From noon on Good Friday until 3 o’clock, when Jesus “yielded up His spirit” (Matthew 27:50), darkness covered literally “all the earth,” coinciding with Jesus’ suffering for “the sins of the whole world” (1 John 2:2). The universal darkness is the only miracle in Matthew’s Passion narrative that occurs before His death. As we will see, the darkness preaches to us the significance of Jesus’ suffering and death for all.
