First Baptist Church of Griffin, Georgia

First Baptist Church of Griffin, Georgia A community of grace This grace is founded on the costly grace of God, most clearly demonstrated in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

At First Baptist Church, we are a family — “a community of grace.” For us, this is more than just a slogan, but a way of living and being in the world. As a people committed to following in the way of Jesus, our hope is that grace will define our life together and take on flesh in all the relationships and ministries of First Baptist. At First Baptist, we believe in a grace that welcomes unconditi

onally. God’s story is ultimately a story about relationships. It is a story about the triune God that exists in perfect unity and harmony. It is a story about human beings that were created in and for relationships – with God, with one another, and with all creation. We believe that our faith flourishes and it becomes real in relationships. At First Baptist, we believe in a grace that worships authentically. Worship is the tangible manifestation of our love for God as a community. At First Baptist, this worship takes on a variety of expressions. From quiet reflection to exultant shouts, formal to informal atmospheres, robed choir to modern praise band, our multiple worship services allow FBC members to express their love for Christ in ways that feel most authentic to how God has created them. First Baptist celebrates the ordained leadership of Spirit-led women and men as both ministers and deacons in our congregational life together. At First Baptist, we believe in a grace that grows continuously. It is a deep truth that none of us have arrived at the finish just yet. We are all “works in progress.” As such, we value the chance to grow and learn together – to ask hard questions, wrestle with difficult circumstances, and allow God to continue shaping us into the men and women God intends for us to be. From the youngest child to the most senior adult, we are guided by the belief that God is continually forming us into the image of Christ. At First Baptist, we believe in a grace that serves passionately. At the heart of God’s story is the person of Jesus, the One who came to serve, not to be served. As followers of Christ, we believe that working to feed the hungry, give water to the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the prisoner (Matthew 25: 31-46) are absolutely central to who we are. As such, partnerships and activity in local, state, national, and global missions are at the heartbeat of our community’s embodiment of God’s grace. At First Baptist, we believe in a grace that gives generously. We believe, not in a God of scarcity, but a God of abundance – a God that can do “exceedingly and abundantly more than we could ask or imagine.” At God’s table, there is room enough for all and we have no need to be stingy with the hope, love, and forgiveness that we have experienced in Christ. Our desire is to use the gifts that God has given us to bless the community around us. Welcome to our “community of grace.” We hope and pray that you’ll find a home here.

Pastor Steven joined our staff on May 7, 2018. He was called as Senior Pastor on May 3, 2020. Over the past 8 years, he has shepherded our congregation through trying times (think pandemic, economic trials, wars, domestic strife). He has been there to sing "Hallelujah" with us in moments of joy, to encourage us, and to bless us by reminding us that we are loved, and there's nothing we can do about it. He freely shares his gifts with us through music, worship, teaching, and friendship. Behind the scenes, he spends much time sitting with committees, hearing the stories of those in need, building relationships within our community, and praying for our people.

Steven, may God's blessings be upon you as you take your sabbatical. May you be assured that your work here at FBC has eternal value. Return home to your congregation rested and renewed. Happy workiversary!

Griffin and Spalding County Residents will gather, as they have done for the past 20 years, at the Spalding County Courthouse Veranda (front patio) to observe the local National Day of Prayer celebration. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer's annual observance in America and it is arriving in the same season that the Country commemorates the 250th anniversary of the nation's birth.

You are invited to join with numerous Pastoral staff and community leaders while we share in the mighty things that unite us as Believers. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, May 7, 2026 from Noon to 12:45 pm and will include prayer, songs of worship and a brief message. Arrive early and grab a seat and enjoy the pre-service worship music. If there will be inclement weather, the event will be moved next door to Journey Church at 210 E Solomon Street.

We invite you to join us for a special day at First Baptist Griffin tomorrow (May 6) to explore how early Baptists shaped the American founding through revival, dissent, and an uncompromising commitment to freedom of conscience. Dr. Samuel Smith, Residential Department Chair and Director of the History Graduate Program at Liberty University, will be with us two guest lecture appearances to share his expertise on the topic of Baptists and Religious Liberty in America. His talks will trace American Baptist roots from the colonial and revolutionary eras and highlight leaders who argued that religious liberty was essential to a republican form of government. From persecution to principled resistance, discover why Baptists became America’s primary populist defenders of local faith, voluntary belief, and liberty from coercion.

First, we will host Dr. Smith during a lunch and learn workshop from 11:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Cheatham Room. Registration is required for this event, so please call the church office (770-227-5517).

Later in the day, Dr. Smith will speak in our Family Life Center (inside Morgan Hall) at 6:00 p.m. This event is free and does not require any reservation. Small groups are encouraged to attend.

Dr. Smith is a renown scholar in early American religious history and the author of books, articles, and reviews in his field. Prior to serving at Liberty University, he was a teacher and administrator in Christian schools.
