Who We Are

Saved By Grace is a community of Christians that holds God’s Word “sacred”. In order for God’s Word to be “held sacred” we ask two questions. The first question we ask is, “What does the Bible say?” Since the Bible is God’s Word, it is not our place to impose our own interpretation upon it. Instead, God’s Word must give the answer and be the source of all our teachings. The second que

stion we ask is, “How does God’s Word show us Jesus?” The Bible does that by first showing us our need for Jesus – that we are lost and condemned sinners. Then it shows us Jesus, who lived, died, and rose for us to save us from our sins. God’s Word not only shows us Jesus, but it also brings us Jesus. We, therefore, “gladly hear and learn it” by gathering around His Word and Sacrament. In Word and Sacrament God gives to us what Jesus has done for us. As He does, He fortifies our faith in Him and then sends us into our daily lives to serve our neighbor in love.

Sunday is Trinity Sunday. It is the custom of the Church to confess the Athanasian Creed on this day. While we will sing a hymn version of Athanasian Creed, the sermon will quote the following from it:
“Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic faith.... and the true Christian faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity and Unity.
“Furthermore it is necessary for everlasting salvation that one also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.. who suffered for our salvation.”
The Trinity is active in our salvation - the Father and the Son - sending the Holy Spirit to give us the second birth we need for salvation, creating faith in Jesus, our Savior. (John 3:1-15)

Today, we remember those who laid down their lives, we pray for all of the families who have an empty seat at the table on this Memorial Day, and thank God for the sacrifice of His own Son, Jesus.

This Sunday is Pentecost, one of the three great festivals in the Christian Church. Pentecost happens to coincide with Memorial Day weekend this year. On Memorial Day we remember the fallen who served our country so that we can live in peace. That is a reflection of the Holy Spirit, who was poured out on Pentecost to bring to remembrance all Jesus taught the disciples. By means of God's Word, the Holy Spirit teaches and brings to our remembrance the words of Jesus. His words bestow forgiveness and peace. "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid." (John 14:27).

The Church is living during the time in between. It is the time in-between Jesus’ ascension which occurred 40 days after Easter and Jesus' return on the Last Day to bring his Church home. During this time in between the Church finds herself in an unfriendly world. (John 16:1-4) Though she does, Jesus provides a safe place in the Church caring for her members by the Spirit-breathed apostolic witness (John 15:26-27) in the Means of Grace and working in us love for one another (I Peter 4:7-11)
