Old Testament: Micah 7: 18-20

Gospel: Luke 15: 1-10 (11-32)

As we think about Father's Day, a poet once penned, “Our Father by whom all fatherhood is named.” As great an honor as is to be named after our heavenly Father, there is no perfect human father. Those of us who are fathers all fall far short. That being true, not only fathers but all of us need our heavenly Father, who shows us mercy. Because we do, Jesus tells a story about a father in Sunday’s text. It is one of his most well known parables - the Parable of the Merciful Father and his Two Sons.

Old Testament: Isaiah 25 :6-9
Epistle: I John 3: 13-18
Gospel: Luke 14: 16-23

The LORD God has prepared a feast of Salvation. (Isaiah 25:6-9) By means of the Gospel the Spirit invites all to believe it and to receive the LORD's saving gifts in the Holy Supper. Many make excuses and reject this invitation, even as the Jews did in the days of Jesus, yet the Master’s house will be filled. The Gospel call therefore goes out to the lowly and despised, into the highways, even to all the Gentiles. Having been seated at this Supper, we are enabled to love one another (1 John 3:13–18) as we await the feast of the Lamb in heaven which will have no end.

Old Testament: Jeremiah 9: 23-24
Epistle: I John 4: 16-21
Gospel: Luke 16: 19-31

In Jesus story about the Rich Man and Lazarus, Jesus tells us that when Lazarus, the beggar died, he was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The name Lazarus means "God is my help." Though it looked like Lazarus had God's disfavor because of the bad in his life, he looked passed the bad and trusted in God's Word. The unnamed rich man did not trust in God; instead, he trusted his riches as evidence of God's favor. Though the rich man trusted them, they could not help him in death. He died and was in torment in Hades. Repentance and faith are worked only through Moses and the prophets—that is, the Word of God, for it points us to Christ. Only through His death and resurrection are we brought the comfort of life everlasting.

Sunday is Trinity Sunday. It is the custom of the Church to confess the Athanasian Creed on this day. While we will sing a hymn version of Athanasian Creed, the sermon will quote the following from it:
“Whoever will be saved shall, above all else, hold the catholic faith.... and the true Christian faith is this, that we worship one God in Trinity and Trinity and Unity.
“Furthermore it is necessary for everlasting salvation that one also believe faithfully the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.. who suffered for our salvation.”
The Trinity is active in our salvation - the Father and the Son - sending the Holy Spirit to give us the second birth we need for salvation, creating faith in Jesus, our Savior. (John 3:1-15)
