In one of her essays, the writer Annie Lamott tells the story of a girl who becomes lost and tells the police officer who stops to help that “if you can get me to my church, I can always find my way home from there.” This morning, Rev. Robin will explore many dimensions of “home” in our lives, our congregation, and our world – the loving place “where the heart is,” as well as the one where the heart aches, too. Where is the home that never closes for you, whether it be inherited or created? What is our responsibility to the refugees who are stateless and between homes on the US border and around the globe? And, how can Eastrose UU be one of your trusted places that feels like “home?” Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker preaching, with Worship Leader Jan A-C. Music from Rev. Barbara Stevens and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. A/V services from Jon N. Spirited Conversations to follow.

Near the end of his life, Buddha sat with his followers and offered a Dharma (wisdom) lesson that consisted entirely of silently twirling a flower. After some time, one of the monks, Mahakasyapa, smiled at the Buddha and he was named the Buddha’s spiritual heir. Some questions we'll explore together: When was the last time you observed the humblest flowers, or stones, or cracks in the pavement in their uniqueness? When was the last time you looked at your partner, your kids, your friends in their uniqueness and in the wonder of the moment without judgment or analysis or words? Can you recall a time when you were truly still and present, allowing yourself to flower and be carried by the moment? Rev Robin Landerman Zucker, preaching with Worship Leader Patty W. Music from Mary R. and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. AV Services from Jon N. Spirited Conversations to follow

Mental illness is more common than cancer, heart disease and diabetes (and the number one reason for hospital admissions nationwide), yet most health insurance is inadequate or non-existent to treat it. Mental illness is not rare, and yet, denial persists – “They’re weak.” “She’s only high-strung or moody.” That kid is just a little weird.” It affects you and your families, the people in the next chair, your neighbors and colleagues. Mental illness happens all around us, and not talking about it will not keep it at bay. In recognition of Mental Health Awareness month, we’ll courageously and honestly explore and reflect on mental illness. My objectives will be to present some facts, rather than myths, about mental health; to increase awareness about its impact on individuals and families; and to consider how we might soften the stigma, expand our empathy and increase our support for those among us most affected by its ravages. Rev Robin Landerman Zucker, preaching with Worship Leader Rev. Suzie Matranga-Watson. Music from Mary R. and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. . AV Services from Ayla B. Potluck lunch to follow.

In the Parable of the Widow’s Mite, an impoverished woman tosses two copper coins into the Treasury. Is this meager or substantial? Can we applaud her contribution or do we view it as insufficient? Is it enough to create a feeling of abundance and gratitude? This morning, as we launch our annual Stewardship campaign “Be The Change,” we’ll explore the topic of “effort” and how the attitude with which we toss in our two cents is worth its weight in gold. Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker preaching with Worship Leader Rev. Suzie Matranga-Watson. Music from Mary R and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. A/V Services from Jon N. In the Exodus story, Yahweh makes four promises to the Israelites. Yet, when Moses ascends Mt Sinai, the Passover pilgrims falter and construct a golden calf (a forbidden idol), causing their leader to smash the 10 commandments against the rocks. These shards were placed in the ark of the covenant along with the second intact tablets to remind the “chosen people” of the power of a sacred vow and the consequences for breaking it. In the Easter story, we also find themes of prophecy, promises, betrayals, and consequences. What can we “moderns” learn from these foundational religious stories and figures about why we make promises, why we should keep them, and why we may be tempted to break them. Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker preaching with Worship Leader Cynthia H. Music from Mary R and the Sunrise Choir, under the direction of Tyler P. A Time for All Ages from Tara T. A/V services from Ayla B. Easter egg hunt for children. New member welcoming ceremony. Potluck lunch to follow.

Growing up, many of us were told to be good little boys and girls. Goodness, however, may not be the best spiritual goal. Perhaps we should aim for health in our spiritual lives, our bodies, our families, our communities, and our national democratic

She’s an icon. A queen of country music, an author, entrepreneur, a voice for working class women, and a philanthropist. She’s Dolly Parton, seemingly beloved by folks of all stripes in our increasingly factionalized country. As we continue Women’s Herstory Month, we’ll explore how she does it and what can we learn from her “Dolitics” about reaching across the cultural and ideological divide that is ever widening in America (especially as we face a crucial midterm election this year)? We’ll sing some Dolly and Dolly-adjacent songs, too. Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker preaching with Worship Leader Jan A. Music from Micah Scothorn and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. A/V Services from Ayla B.

Do women deserve rights and a voice in society? This quest has been a struggle for centuries. Two systems in our country shape an answer to this seemingly straightforward question. In one, we are fully entitled, and in the other, we’re not or we’re threatened to have whatever equality we currently have stripped away. Rabid right-wing podcasters, pastors, and politicians are asserting that women should not have the right to vote, should forfeit reproductive rights and in an especially horrifying example, be sent to breeding gulags. Gender has always been a throughline in fascist politics. As we begin women’s history month, we’ll ask: How can we and how must we respond as misogyny goes more and more mainstream in America? Rev. Robin Landerman Zucker preaching with Worship Leader Katie Norris Paries, who will offer a personal reflection. Music from Mary R and a Time for All Ages from Tara T. A/V Services from Jon N. Potluck lunch to follow.
