Today, we begin Numbers in our See JESUS in the OT reading plan!
For many Bible readers, Numbers is one of those books that can be easy to overlook. Some chalk it up to being censuses and lists of names. Others skip ahead to the more familiar stories -- the spies in the promised land, the bronze serpent, Balaam's donkey, or the prophecy of the coming King. But Numbers is far more that people think -- it's breathed out by God and profitable for His people.
At its heart, Numbers tells the Story of a faithful God leading an unfaithful people through the wilderness. Again and again, God's people doubt, complain, rebel, and refuse to trust His promises. Again and again, though, God remains faithful. He guides them by His presence, preserves them by His grace, provides salvation from judgment, and continues His plan to bring for the promised King.
That's why we don't want to rush past or ignore this book, searching for what our earthly perspectives deem interesting. Jesus told the disciples on the road to Emmaus that ALL the Scriptures testify about Him (Luke 24:27). When Jesus left them, they said, "Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked to us on the road, while He opened to us the Scriptures?" Numbers should produce the same response in us: pointing us to Jesus as the faithful guide, salvation lifted, and the promised King.
