We try to share a "Songs for Sunday" playlist as often as we can to help us prepare for Sunday. But these songs aren't homework. They're not just one more thing to tack onto our busyness. They're an invitation. They're an opportunity to fix our minds on Jesus on a random Thursday, Friday, or Saturday and remember that worshiping Jesus and belonging to a local church family aren't limited to a few hours on Sunday mornings.
It's easy to approach church with a consumer mindset. And, in a sense, we do come to be fed. We need the Word preached, the encouragement of our brothers and sisters, and the grace God gives through His gathered church. But we don't come merely as consumers or spectators; we come as members of one another.
Hebrews 10:23-25 tells us to hold fast to our hope and to "consider how to stir up one another to love and good works", encouraging one another as we gather to worship. That happens through conversations, prayers, and the preaching of the Word, but it also happens as we sing together. We benefit from hearing our brothers and sisters proclaim the truth of the gospel beside us in singing, and they need to hear our voices doing the same.
So, if you will, take some time before Sunday. Listen to these songs. Sing along. Pray for your brothers and sisters in Christ. Ask God to prepare our hearts, turn our attention away from ourselves and the world, and fix our eyes on Jesus.
Then, come ready -- not only to receive, but to participate. Not merely to hear, but to sing. Not simply to be encouraged, but to encourage one another as we hold fast together to the hope we have in Christ.
