But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord."
Luke 2:10-11
Today is Christmas Eve, we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, more than 2000 years ago. His birth marked the beginning of a new era and shows the importance that our Savior has come.
Yet his birth characterizes simplicity. The King was born in a stable, He was lying in a manger. And the first visitors were shepherds from the field, who did not have the most impressing status. Why didn’t the kings visit Him first? In the above verses, we read that the shepherds were scared when they saw the angel. Maybe because of his appearance, the light and the fact that it was such a sudden surprise.
But maybe the shepherds were also afraid because they felt so insignificant. Maybe they wondered why they would deserve this special honor. And maybe you ask yourself the same question. You might feel small unseen. Or maybe you are seen, yet you feel so insecure. You may worry about how other people see you. You can be surrounded by friends, but still feel alone, because you’re scared to show the real you, but God sees the real you. And He wants to come to you. You are not any less than the greatest kings. The good news of Jesus’ birth was so important, that God chose the shepherds above the kings. Because they would understand and appreciate how great, how special this was.
To kings, the birth of this King might not matter that much. They wouldn’t be surprised if the news was first announced to them. They would sent a gift, and that would have been it. But the shepherds were filled with awe. They felt seen, and they wanted to share the good news with everyone, in their pure enthusiasm. Maybe you’ve heard the Christmas story so many times, that you are accustomed to the real message. I pray that you will experience the good news again in childlike awe. That you are filled with enthusiasm, and long to share it with the people around you. God sees you, just like He saw the shepherds.
