Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. This, St. Peter’s confession, is the rock upon which Christ’s church is built. However, he warned his disciples to tell no one because 1) they didn’t yet understand his mission, and 2) his work was not yet accomplished. But that doesn’t give us a free pass to tell no one. Rather, we should boldly confess with Peter and all the church that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Our current political climate is fostering either a hatred of foreigners and Islam, or an opened arm embrace of them with little regard for the grave consequences of doing so. But the Lord commands us to keep justice and do righteousness, inviting the foreigner to join to God and his ways, and he will have a place in the Lord’s house of prayer for all people. Jesus commands us to love one another, not hold others away in the name of self-preservation.

Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Mankind had failed to attain the righteousness of the law, so Christ came to win for us the righteousness that comes through faith. The word of Christ, and righteousness by faith through him, is the life of the world.

Come and buy and eat without money and without price! God delivers what is good and what satisfies, and it starts with his Word. His word is truth and life (whether we keep it or not). It benefits those who keep it. Sadly none of us keep in perfectly. Therefore, God sent his Son to fulfill his Word through perfect obedience. Now the word tells of Christ and God’s covenant of steadfast, sure love. With that come even more good things, in the sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, a community of brothers and sisters in Christ, and eternal life in Christ’s restored creation.

There is peace for the people of God through Jesus Christ. In him, the love of God surrounds all believers like the mountains surround Jerusalem. Being made righteous by faith, a land is prepared where the scepter of wickedness may not rest.

God’s Word does not return to him empty, but will succeed in the purpose for which it is sent. It will lead the redeemed children of God in a joyful procession, replacing the curses of sin with glorious growth.

Jesus invites the weary and heavy laden to come to him for rest, but he also tells them to learn from him, for he is gentle and lowly of heart. Should we learn to be like him, we also would relieve the burdens of others. We might not change the world, but we would definitely be a blessing to our neighbors and community if we learned gentleness and humility.

Jesus, called the Prince of Peace by Isaiah, whose birth was heralded by angels with songs of peace, shockingly tells his disciples that he did not come to bring peace to the earth, but a sword. While we have peace that surpasses understanding with God in heaven, on earth Christians may not be beloved by the world, or even our own families who do not share the faith. But those who do receive the gospel of Jesus receive Jesus and the Father and the reward of the Son at his right hand.
