It's the beginning of a new school year! New schools, maybe. New friends. New teachers. New routines. And, of course, new backpacks.

But these new backpacks are not the only ones our children wear or carry. Every child has an invisible backpack that holds things like self-esteem, a feeling of being loved, of being appreciated, of being valued, good feelings. Just like keeping that physical backpack well stocked, we have the responsibility of keeping that invisible backpack well stocked. It should be fully loaded with good things every morning before a child walks out the front door.

All day long children will encounter people (teachers, friends, family members, strangers) who may take things out of that invisible backpack by using harsh words, demeaning words, being a bully, name-calling. By the time a child returns hone that backpack may be empty. Sadly, some children never really have a full backpack at any time.

So, every time you see a child (infant through college-age) think about that invisible backpack. Now think about what you can do individually, or as part of a faith organization, social organization, community organization, to fill that backpack with things to support and uplift that child. You never know what positive impact filling that invisible backpack could have on a child.
