Veterans Awareness Center Foundation

Veterans Awareness Center Foundation OUR MISSION IS TO ASSIST ALL VETERAN’S TO ACHIEVE THEIR INDEPENDENCE AND SELF SUFFICIENCY THROUGH ACCESS TO INFORMATION AND SERVICES.

The location of the Veterans Awareness Center, located in Greenwood, Delaware was approved by the Sussex County Council in 2007. At the Veterans Awareness Center, every veteran is offered a cup of coffee or a soft drink and find other veterans that they can call “friend!” Our line is open twenty four hours each day and seven days each week. The Veterans Awareness Center was opened long before th

e CBOC’s were opened or even the Vet Center in Georgetown was open. The Awareness Center was opened in 2008 to support veterans that were retired or unemployed but still held current certifications and were looking for employment. With many employment match successes, it is the intent of the Veterans Awareness Center to be pro-active and to alleviate veterans from becoming at risk and ultimately homeless. The Awareness Center expanded in 2009 and became the central office for the Delaware Veterans’ Stand Down. The Mission statement for the Delaware Veterans Stand Down reads “To assist all Delaware Veterans to achieve independence and self-sufficiency through access to information and services.” Delaware has consistently counted over four hundred Veterans who have no residence of their own. During the 2014 (the sixth annual) Stand Down, veterans were provided over ninety-five services by expert service providers. Services included: members from the VA Hospital, dental service, haircuts and a continental breakfast along with a hot lunch. Over six hundred veterans and service providers were provided the opportunity to get answers and points of contacts for any issue they or those they are assisting, may be dealing with. Many of the Delaware service organizations joined hands to assist all veterans on the Stand Down Day providing the building location, information, service claim support, toiletries, and so much more to all veterans. In addition, the Awareness Center is the central office for the Delaware Female Veterans’ Teas. Female Veterans enjoy tea and a wonderful lunch during an afternoon planned just for them. During the tea the veterans are so proud to tell their story by providing their military histories and where they served. Many find that they have served at the same time and the same locations. Many of our female veterans find friends that they have so much in common with and most likely would never have met! Successes over the last year include: Matching veterans to employment and connecting with the Department of Labor; requesting Service Organizations to support veterans who are in financial need; transportation to shelters; child support issues; matching renters for veterans; transportation to medical appointments including Perry Point and the Veteran Hospitals in Elsmere and Baltimore; legal support and attending court appointments with our veterans; assisting veterans with pre-arranging funerals; arranging purchases of their very own mobile homes; planning and executing the Delaware Veterans Stand Down; Dressing for success; ensuring that veterans are getting where they need to be: counseling, HUDVASH or medical attention. Last but not least, at the Veterans Awareness Center “I don’t know, is not an option” we find solutions for all veterans’ issues. Respectfully,

Liz Byers-Jiron

September Stand Down to assist Delaware veterans to achieve independence and self-sufficiency
The Annual Delaware Veterans Stand Down will return Friday, September 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Dover’s Schutte Park.
The event, first begun in 2009 was cancelled for the last two years because of the pandemic is full on for this year, according to organizers Liz Byers-Jiron of the Delaware Veterans’ Awareness Center Foundation at 12385 Sussex Highway Greenwood, DE.
A Veterans Stand Down is a one-day outreach event for all veterans and their guests. It is organized, planned, and carried out by a volunteer committee that plans year-round. Agencies and local service providers across the state offer critically needed assistance in one convenient location. Services include housing, medical, dental, flu shots, behavioral health, VA eligibility assessment and benefits, in addition to haircuts, legal service, hot food, warm clothing, employment readiness assistance, and camaraderie.
“The 2019 event featured 150 organizations that assisted 1,500 veterans, and we look forward to a good turnout this year. We rely on financial support and in-kind donations from the community," said Mr. Byers-Jiron. "We are also looking for a volunteer photographer, golf cart drivers, transportation truck, tables and chairs along with a wish list of items for our veterans."
All donations are tax-deductible, and checks should be made payable to ‘Delaware Veterans Stand Down, 12385 Sussex Highway, Greenwood, DE 19950.
