H.S.I. (Holy Spirit Inspired)
PAUL’S GREETING AND MISSION:
Romans 1:1
Paul introduces himself as a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for God’s gospel.
Meaning: Paul is saying his identity and authority come from Jesus, not from himself. His life is devoted to proclaiming the Divine Gospel
Romans 1:2
The gospel was promised beforehand through the prophets in the holy Scriptures.
Meaning: Christianity is not a new invention. The message about Jesus fulfills God’s long-planned promises in the Old Testament.
Romans 1:3
The gospel concerns God’s Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh.
Meaning: Jesus truly entered human history and fulfilled the promises made to David about a coming king.
Romans 1:4
Jesus was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead.
Meaning: The resurrection publicly confirmed Jesus’ identity and authority. He is not merely a teacher, He is the risen Lord.
Romans 1:5
Through Jesus, Paul received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all nations.
Meaning: Paul’s ministry is a gift from God, and its goal is not merely information but faith that results in obedience.
Romans 1:6
The Roman believers are also among those called by Jesus Christ.
Meaning: Their salvation is not accidental. God called them into belonging to Christ.
Romans 1:7
Paul greets them as loved by God and called to be saints.
Meaning: Christians are loved by God and set apart for Him. Grace and peace come from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
PAUL’S DESIRE TO VISIT ROME:
Romans 1:8
Paul thanks God because the believers’ faith is known throughout the world.
Meaning: Their reputation for faithfulness and obedience had spread widely.
Romans 1:9

Romans 1:11
He wants to impart some spiritual gift to strengthen them.

Romans 1:12

Meaning: Ministry is not one-sided. Even an apostle needs encouragement from other believers.
Romans 1:13
Paul says he has often planned to come, but has been prevented, and he wants fruit among them just as among other Gentiles.
Meaning: His missionary heart is to see lives changed by the Divine gospel.
Romans 1:14
He feels himself under obligation to Greeks and barbarians, wise and foolish.
Meaning: The gospel is for every kind of person, no matter their background or education.
Romans 1:15
He is eager to preach the gospel in Rome too.
Meaning: Paul is not ashamed of the message. He wants even the great city of Rome to hear it.
THE THEME OF THE WHOLE LETTER:
Romans 1:16
Paul is not ashamed of the gospel, because it is God’s power for salvation to everyone who believes, first to the Jew and also to the Greek.
Meaning: The gospel may seem weak to the world, but it is actually God’s saving power. It is for all who believe.
Romans 1:17
In the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Meaning: God’s righteous way of making sinners right with Himself is revealed in the gospel. The basis of life with God is faith, not human merit. This verse is foundational for the whole book.
HUMANITY SUPPRESSES GOD THE FATHER’S DIVINE TRUTH:
Romans 1:18
God’s wrath is revealed against ungodliness and unrighteousness, especially when people suppress the truth.
Meaning: God is not indifferent to sin. His holy response against evil is real and active.
Romans 1:19
What can be known about God is plain to people, because God has made it known.
Meaning: Creation gives enough evidence to show that God exists and is powerful.
Romans 1:20
God’s invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature are seen in what He has made, so people are without excuse.
Meaning: Ignorance is not the issue. The issue is rebellion.
Romans 1:21
Though they knew God, they did not honor Him or give thanks, but became futile in their thinking.
Meaning: The root of sin is not merely bad behavior but a heart that refuses worship and gratitude.
Romans 1:22
Claiming to be wise, they became fools.
Meaning: Human pride often calls itself wisdom, while rejecting God.
Romans 1:23
They exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images of mortal man, birds, animals, and reptiles.
Meaning: Idolatry is a tragic exchange: the Creator is replaced by created things.
GOD THE FATHER GIVES PEOPLE OVER TO THEIR CHOSEN SIN:
Romans 1:24
Therefore God gave them up to impurity, to dishonoring their bodies among themselves.
Meaning: One judgment of God is to let people experience the consequences of their rebellion.
Romans 1:25
They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped the creature rather than the Creator.
Meaning: Sin always involves a reversal of worship. The created order is placed above God.
Romans 1:26
God gave them up to dishonorable passions.
Meaning: Paul continues describing how rebellion can distort human desire.
Romans 1:27
He describes men and women acting against God’s design and receiving due consequences.
Meaning: Paul is showing that turning from God affects not only beliefs but also sexual ethics and the whole moral order.
Romans 1:28
Since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind.
Meaning: Rejecting God’s truth eventually affects thinking itself.
Romans 1:29
They are filled with all kinds of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice, envy, murder, strife, deceit, gossip, and more.
Meaning: Sin is broad and relational. It corrupts the heart and damages community.
Romans 1:30
Paul continues with slander, hating God, insolence, pride, boasting, and inventing evil.
Meaning: Pride and rebellion show up in speech and attitude as well as actions.
Romans 1:31
They are foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless.
Meaning: Sin strips away wisdom, loyalty, compassion, and mercy.
Romans 1:32
They know God’s righteous decree that such things deserve death, yet not only do they do them, they approve others who do them.
Meaning: This is the deepest warning of the chapter. Sin is not only personal; people also normalize and celebrate it in others.
