Forrest Gump reminds us that people are valuable not because of their talents, accomplishments, or usefulness, but simply because of who they are. Like Paul teaches, every person is indispensable, and our gifts mean little without love. We are called to see, honor, and love others with grace—especially those the world may overlook.

This final week reminds us that historical context helps us understand Scripture faithfully. “An eye for an eye” was not a command for revenge, but a way to limit violence and ensure that justice was proportionate. Jesus then calls his followers beyond retaliation toward mercy, courage, and love. As we finish the series, we are reminded to ask what a passage meant in its original setting, how it fits with the rest of Scripture, and how it points us toward the way of Christ.

This week we learn that context matters when reading Scripture. In 2 Thessalonians 3:10, Paul was addressing people who were able to work but chose not to, not people who were unable to work or needed help. The passage calls us to responsibility while also reminding us to show mercy, generosity, and care for those in need. We should be careful not to use Scripture in ways that harm vulnerable people and should always consider the larger message of God’s love.

This week’s lesson reminds us that genre matters when we read the Bible. Different types of Scripture—such as proverbs, poetry, stories, and letters—should be understood in different ways. Proverbs 22:6 is often treated as a guarantee that children will always follow the path their parents teach them. But a proverb offers wisdom about how life generally works, not an absolute promise. Faithful parenting and spiritual formation matter deeply, but we cannot control the choices or outcomes of others. The lesson is simple: a proverb is not a promise.

This week we continue our series by exploring why reading Scripture in context matters. Using Ephesians 5:22 as an example, we'll see how isolating a single verse can distort its meaning and miss the larger message of Christ's self-giving love. Together we'll learn the importance of reading not just one verse, but the surrounding passage and the whole story of Scripture with humility, patience, and a willingness to let God's Word speak in its fullness.
