Rabbi's Weekly Teaching
October 11, 2024

Dear Friend,

You asked me to explain to you why Jews feel so threatened by the anti-Israel protests. You told me that you think it is “just an expressed concern for the loss of innocents that is a result of the Gaza War.”

I wanted to respond to you and help you understand why Jews are so upset and why we feel that there has been an allowance for Jew-hatred that would not be tolerated if others were similarly targeted. (Think of people of color or sexual orientation.)

The Gaza War did not start in a vacuum. On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists attacked the State of Israel. They murdered 1400 human beings, along with their multiple acts of torture and r**e, and took men, women, and children as hostages. The Hamas brutality was savage, and one would think unimaginable. But, unfortunately, in Jewish history, it is quite imaginable.

During WWII, the N***s and their willing collaborators murdered half of European Jewry, one-third of World Jewry. Built upon the historical foundation of Jew-Hatred, the world did little to help the Jewish victims. Every Jew knows this historical fact, and what we also know is that there was no Jewish army to protect Jews. If not a Zionist before WWII, logic would dictate that most Jews would become Zionists after the war.

The term Zionist should possess a clear definition: a person who desires and supports the establishment of a Jewish State in the Land of Israel. Why the Land of Israel? -- Because the Jewish people have retained an unbreakable link to the Land of Israel throughout their history.

Before 1948, Zionism was a dream; now, it is a reality. Approximately half of the world’s Jewry lives in Israel. Like every other self-autonomous nation, the citizens of the Jewish State must create a secure country and protect its citizens. Jews will no longer tolerate not having the appropriate national means by which to defend themselves.

If the Arabs had accepted the partition plan in 1947, the State of Israel would have defined U.N. partition borders. However, from the beginning, the “Two-State” partition was rejected, and immediately upon Israel’s May 14, 1948 Declaration of Independence, the fledgling Jewish State was attacked by its Arab country neighbors. The Arab-Israeli conflict remains unresolved. Many people hold different solutions.

As a Zionist, fair debate can begin when the other side recognizes Israel’s right to exist as a secure nation that can ensure its peace. The Two-State solution is complex and probably, in present circumstances, not viable. However, if each side recognizes the “right to exist” of the other, then there can be appropriate discussions.

Hamas and Hezbollah do not recognize Israel’s right to exist, and along with their Iranian national sponsor, they are all dedicated to wiping “Israel off the Map.” “From the River to the Sea” is the historical declaration of this genocidal intent.

To be pro-Palestinian is not unethical unless accompanied by the desire to see the elimination of the Jewish State. If one is pro-Palestinian and wants to see two nations living side by side as democratic, peaceful nations, then there is much to discuss. However, sadly, this is highly uncommon amongst the protesters.

As long as Palestinian interests allow for the anti-Zionists to lead their national aspirations, Israel would be foolish and morally irresponsible not to defend themselves as best they can, even when their enemy commonly utilizes human shields. Every anti-Zionist protester wishes to “wipe Israel off the map,” and there should be no accommodations for supporting them. It would be similar to supporting and accommodating N***s or the K*K.

The Boycott, Divest, and Sanction (BDS) movement is dominated by a leadership that is opposed to Israel’s continued existence as a Jewish State, and no support or accommodation should be made to BDS.

As a Jew, I feel how the world continues to threaten us. The trick of saying, “I don’t hate Jews; I just hate Zionists” is absurd. Hating Zionists is hating the right of Jews to possess the same rights granted to all other nations. Applying double standards to Israel is Jew-Hatred because Israel is the Jewish State.

Someone saying, “Israel has the right to defend itself,” but then thinks Israel shouldn’t fight the enemy threatening them as best they can and, like any other moral democratic nation would fight, is either a hypocrite or an anti-Zionist. Either way, no sane Jew will ever give up their right to ensure their collective safety.

October 7 is now horrifyingly etched into the Jewish collective memory. It reminded Jews that the darkness of hatred and violence towards the Jewish people remains and is still capable of surfacing in the most horrifying ways.

The atrocities committed by Hamas terrorists need to be combatted by moral people who reject that hatred and evil acts are ever morally justified. Never again is a call to action, not a call to prayer.

So, my friend, you asked me to explain to you why Jews feel so threatened by the anti-Israel protests. I hope this helps you to understand, and we can count on your support!

Gemar Chatimah Tovah and Shabbat Shalom,

Rabbi Mitch

Memorial Day Prayer

Our God, God of our ancestors, we thank you for the numerous blessings you have bestowed upon our nation.

Our country has been blessed to demonstrate how peoples of many faiths and heritages can live side by side and enrich one another's lives through friendship and the sharing of our unique traditions.

We are united this day in a solemn act of gratitude to those who have served in our nation's defense, to those who have risked their personal safety to save the lives of others, and, above all, to those who have died serving this country.

Their sacrifices are forever remembered by us and by our children for generations to come.

We do not forget.

In all our many faiths, we are united in this:

Our prayers are with those who serve our country today.

We ask God that they may return speedily and in good health and safety to their loved ones.

And may God grant each of us the wisdom to uphold this nation's virtues, that it may continue to serve as a beacon of liberty and harmony between peoples for all the world to see.

Amen.

Am Yisrael Chai 🇮🇱💕

No other nation on earth has achieved what the Jewish People of Israel have accomplished: not one miracle but countless miracles, over and over again.

May God watch over the State of Israel, the Land of Israel and the People of Israel. (And, help to bring the hostages home!)

Shabbat Shalom💕💕
————————————————-
Rabbi's Weekly Teaching

Friday, May 3, 2024

Last Saturday afternoon, a group of masked demonstrators carrying a white supremacist banner protested in Greenwich for about an hour.

Video taken shows them yelling “Sieg Heil” while raising their arms with the N**i salute.

The N**i Party in Germany adopted the phrase “Sieg Heil” because it translates as “Hail Victory.” It was their most widely used phrase, along with their arm-raising N**i salute, and continues to be utilized by white supremacists worldwide.

This local incident co-occurs with the antisemitic tropes commonly utilized by the Pro-Hamas/Anti-Israel protesters at universities throughout our nation, heightening fear amongst Jews and good people all over.

It feels as if America is much closer to 1933 than anyone would have imagined was possible.

Our annual communal commemoration of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, will occur at Temple Sholom on Monday, May 6 at 7:00 pm. Presented by UJA-JCC Greenwich, we gather in solemn remembrance, and this year, we will listen to the testimony of Holocaust Survivor Irene Zisblatt while she shares her personal story.

Irene was born in northern Hungary and, at the age of 13, was sent to Auschwitz. She was the only survivor of the Holocaust in her entire family.

The opportunity to listen to firsthand testimony from a Holocaust survivor is an essential reminder of the atrocities of genocide and the gaping hole left by each of the Six Million Jews murdered.

However, soon, there will be a time when there are no survivors left. The average age of a Holocaust survivor today is 86 years old.

Losing the ones who directly experienced the Holocaust, combined with the rise of Holocaust Denialism, is especially scary. Increasingly, holocaust symbols, such as swastikas, are carelessly utilized by ignorant, insensitive individuals, or worse, people who harbor antisemitic beliefs.

Too often, enemies of Israel reverse Holocaust imagery and apply its motifs to Israelis attempting to keep the Jewish Nation’s border secure and peaceful.

Those who ask how the Holocaust could occur can look at how easily and quickly the rise of antisemitism is taking root in our nation, along with the world at large.

Neighbors stood by while European Jews were led into cattle cars and sent to their deaths.

The Holocaust occurred as the N**i’s “Final Solution,” but it was a horror that came about while nurtured in an environment of apathy, ignorance, prejudice, and hate.

Locally, the First Selectman’s office has led the way to combat antisemitism by creating a town task force.

As a task force member, I am especially pleased to see the active engagement of the Greenwich Public and Independent Schools.

But, we all need to take more significant notes that we cannot ignore well-documented warnings on the considerable rise of antisemitic incidents.

Those who take exception to how Israel is attempting to fight a war against an enemy sworn to destroy her right to exist often apply double standards to Israel versus how other countries might operate in similar circumstances.

Iran, a country often declaring its desire to “remove Israel from the map,” launched over 200 drones and missiles at Israel.

Immediate guidance by other ally nations was to counsel diplomacy.

But, one might quickly wonder how these same countries would react under similar circumstances if such a blatant attack of war had victimized them.

Fortunately, Jews who are not blessed to live in countries where they are welcome possess the option of living in their historic Jewish homeland of Israel, protected by a Jewish army.

The time when Jews cannot defend themselves has passed.

It is purposeful that the Hebrew date of Holocaust commemoration falls on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising.

Discrimination, dehumanization, and senseless hatred are vital ingredients that brew the dangers of antisemitism.

But ignorance and apathy are what allow the brew to boil most easily.

Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize honoree Elie Wiesel Z’L said in 1986: “The opposite of love is not hate; it’s indifference.”

The oft-cited refrain, “Never Again,” isn’t meant to be a prayer but a call to concerted action.

We honor the legacy of Holocaust victims and survivors when we quickly speak out and act against all forms of discrimination whenever we hear of it or witness it.

Doing or saying nothing is not a moral option because silence normalizes immoral acts.

The world can debate the politics of Israel, but not the right of Israel to exist.

When Jews conclude their Passover seder, we pronounce “L’Shanah Ha’Ba’ah B’Yerushalayim” -- “Next year in Jerusalem,” an ancient prayer that came to fruition after the Holocaust.

A safe and secure Israel, sharing peaceful relations with her Arab neighbors, remains the ideal all should wish to pursue actively.

But peace is earned, not gifted, and we all need to endeavor a lot harder at the sacred work required by which Shalom – Peace – is permanently obtained.

“Not supposed to happen in 2024,” Greenwich resident and member of the local Jewish community, Jolie Goldring, told The Post.
