Are you able to help?
UPDATE: With record low temperatures, we continue to see high numbers at our shelters and have decided to remain open 24-hours until at least 10am on Wednesday. Here are three things you can do right now to help:
1. Encourage anyone who needs it to seek shelter. HumanKind’s shelters are open 24/7 through Tuesday and we will not turn anyone away. Our Men’s Emergency Winter Shelter is located at 841 N. Market, our Temporary Women’s Shelter is inside the lobby of the former 316 Hotel building at 1011 N. Topeka, and The Inn (our year-round shelter for families and individuals including those with pets) is at 320 E. Central. Those seeking shelter can just show up at our temporary shelters but must call 316-264-8051 to confirm bed availability before coming to The Inn.
2. Donate. We are fortunate to have a well-stocked clothing closet but we are in heightened need of jeans, boots, underwear, and gloves. Donations can be brought to the HumanKind Admin Office at 829 N. Market (next to the Men’s Shelter) between 8:30am-5pm, Monday through Friday.
3. Make a gift. On average it costs $20 per person, per night to operate the Men’s Emergency Winter Shelter under normal operation. Additional hours bring additional costs so any financial gifts are gratefully received. To make a gift, you can visit our website at humankindwichita.org/donate or click the donate button on our page.
We will continue to monitor the weather and respond accordingly, keeping our social media channels up-to-date with any changes to our immediate needs and operations.
A huge thank you to everyone who has reached out to ask how they can help, donated money or clothes, sent messages, shared our posts, or otherwise helped spread the word about our needs this week. Our work truly would not be possible without all of you.
