I pray that this Friday morning finds you well. I am sure we are all thankful for air conditioning this week. The heat and humidity have been something else. I also think we are making up for some of the dryer parts of our summer with all the rain. If you are tired of sweating, just remember, snow is not that far off. If you are just tired, take heart, a long weekend awaits you; happy Labor Day weekend. I look forward to seeing you at church this Sunday!

Morning Service: Run a Good Race (Hebrews 12)

The call of Hebrews 12 is to run a good race focused on Jesus. This means we need to lay aside some things that are less important. Some of those things are neutral, they are not bad in themselves but get in the way as we seek to live a life focused on Christ. Some of those things are sinful, building walls in our relationship with Christ. Jesus ran this race before us and invites each of us to follow His path. Read this chapter and see the many ways your race on earth needs to be run.

We will also have the opportunity to focus in Jesus in the observance of communion.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Revelation Song
In Christ Alone
Thank You Jesus for the Blood

08/28/2026

It is my prayer that you are trusting God as you live for Him this week. As some of us were reminded this morning by the you-version verse of the day taken from the book we have been studying all summer.

Heb. 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

In a world that is constantly changing and with anxiety at an all time high, rest in the fact that our God does not change. He is the one constant in an ever changing life.

I look forward to opening God’s Word this weekend and thinking about what it means to live a life characterized by faith.

Morning Service: A Life of Faith (Hebrews 11)

We come to a chapter in God’s Word that many have named the “Hall of Fame of Faith.” It begins with the best definition of faith seen in all of Scripture and then highlights many Old Testament saints that lived out faith in their lives. We can learn much from their example. We are called to live out our faith. In fact, a life of faith is the only way we will be pleasing to our God. Meditate on the following verse and come ready for the Holy Spirit to challenge you.

Heb. 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Come People of the Risen King
How Deep the Father’s Love for Us
You Are Unchanging
O Church Come Lift Your Eyes

Take some time and listen to them on your favorite streaming app and come ready to sing them together with the rest of your church family Sunday morning.

Evening Service: All About the Land and the Promise (Genesis 47)

Jacob and the rest of his family are now new residents in the land of Egypt, and they receive a personal greeting from Pharaoh. The focus now returns to the famine that still has five years remaining. We see Joseph as the ultimate administrator, serving Pharoah and providing for the people. There is a seventeen-year jump at the end of the chapter where we see Jacob highlight the importance of both the land and the promise given by God first to Abraham, his father Isaac, and then to himself.

Our summer is coming to a close. Our teachers reported back to school this past week and the students arrive on Monday. For those of us who live in Greenville, we know the ultimate sign summer is ending is the Danish Festival. There are a couple of opportunities for you to be involved in sharing God’s love this weekend.

First, you can hand out popsicles after the Fairy Tale parade on Friday night. Just be at the corner of Grove and M91 a little before 6pm. Second, the church has a float in the parade this year. If you desire to walk beside the float and hand out candy, be at the high school parking lot about 10:30am on Saturday.

It should be a fun weekend that we can cap off by worshiping together on Sunday.

Morning Service: The Good Thing that Came (Hebrews 10)

The preacher of this sermon we call the book of Hebrews has good things on his mind. Not like the good things you may have experienced this weekend; but the good things that come because of Christ. To prepare yourself for worship, get alone with God and begin to list the good things that have come because of your relationship with Jesus Christ. Jesus, Himself, is the ultimate “Good Thing” that has come.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Worthy of It All
Amazing Grace – My Chains are Gone
I am Not My Own

Evening Service: The Family Moves (Genesis 46)

The time had come. Jacob, along with his kids and his grandkids, load up the wagons and make the trip to Egypt. Along the way, Jacob hears from God. God assures him that it is His plan to grow Jacob’s family in the protection of Egypt. The chapter ends with Jacob and Joseph reuniting after 22 years apart. In this chapter we continue to see God doing His work behind the scenes to fulfill His promises to this family.

Welcome to the weekend. Thank you to all who prayed for Kris and me last week while we were away. We had a good time enjoying the change of scenery and catching up with some long-time friends. Bethany was able to spend most of the week with us as an added blessing. A big thank you to both Jeremy Wise (Connections Hour) and Tyler Merren (Morning Service) for speaking God’s truth last week. It is good to be back home, and I look forward to our time together this weekend.

Morning Service: Not Just a Building Plan (Hebrews 9)

Sunday morning, we continue our trek through the book of Hebrews. This week we will see how the tabernacle of the Old Testament was a shadow to the heavenly tabernacle where Jesus sits as priest and king. The detailed plan God gave Moses in building the tabernacle had a distinct purpose in that it pointed to Christ. The imperfect blood that was shed in the sacrifices for sin under the law were a shadow to the perfect blood of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus is greater!

Evening Service: The Great Reveal – Part 2 (Genesis 45)

The time has finally arrived for Joseph to reveal himself to his brothers. This chapter is filled with great emotion. We will see forgiveness and reconciliation demonstrated in a very real way. We will also see the sovereignty of a great God.

Morning Service: The New is Better Than the Old (Hebrews 8)

The old being replaced by something new and better is a staple in life! Every earthly thing will become obsolete. The preacher of Hebrews uses this thought to explain why the new covenant is so much better than the old covenant. The old covenant (the law) served its purpose but has been replaced by the new covenant in Christ!

We will also have the opportunity to observe communion.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Kris and I will be on vacation this upcoming week. We look forward to a good time away. Next Sunday (August 9th), one of our elders, Tyler Merren, will speak in the morning service. During the evening service the plan is to watch Sight and Sound’s version of Joseph. We have been studying the life of Joseph on Sunday evenings. My prayer is that through this drama we see the human side of Joseph in a very real way. Be watching for things that are straight out of the biblical text and those things that were added for dramatic effect (there will be a quiz when I return - jk). We want to make you aware that this is a 2-hour musical so this will be an extended service.

The older I get the faster the weeks fly by. In many ways it feels like we were just looking forward to Summer and now July is about to bid us farewell. My encouragement to you is to get out and enjoy this beautiful weather. For Kris and me it means a quick trip to Dayton and back.

I do look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday. God has given us some great truth to study together.

Morning Service: What is the Deal with Melchizedek? (Hebrews 7)

Back in Hebrews 5 the writer of Hebrews began talking about Jesus as our Great High Priest. It was then the name Melchizedek was brought up as an Old Testament example or foreshadowing of the role Christ would ultimately fulfill. After a spiritual tangent on the dangers of falling away from close relationship with God (in chapter 6) this preacher returns to his Melchizedek example. Jesus is both our priest and our king. Both of these concepts should bring much comfort to our hearts.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Evening Service: Another Test – Part 2 (Genesis 44)

After an interesting visit with Joseph, the brothers begin making their way back home with full bags of grain in hand. What the brothers did not know was that Joseph had one final test for them. A cup placed in Benjamin’s bag would be the ultimate test to see if the brothers were the same men they were 20 years before.

You made it, it is Friday. The psalmist gave us a special gift to encourage you today. Read it and let the truth of this verse permeate your soul.

Psa. 136:1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

Our God is good. Spend a few moments today focusing on God’s goodness in your life. God’s love for you is an eternal love that will always be there. Thank him and praise him this morning. If you need a little extra boost, read the rest of this great psalm and let the repetition of this great Psalm encourage you. Maybe even write your own song and end each phrase with, “for his steadfast love endures forever.”

We look forward to continuing our Jesus is Greater series on Sunday and I hope you will be able to join us.

Morning Service: Spiritual Schooling (Hebrews 6)

Spiritual maturity is on the mind of the writer of Hebrews as we turn the page to chapter 6. His hope is that his audience can move past the elementary (foundational) truth about Jesus and be able to understand some deeper truth that must be lived out in their lives. Along the way we will encounter one of the hardest passages of Scripture to interpret. The believer must grow in their relationship with Christ and failure to do so will have its consequences.

Another summer weekend is upon us, and it looks like a good weekend to get out and enjoy God’s creation. I hope to see you this Sunday as we continue our Jesus is Greater summer series in the book of Hebrews.

Morning Service: Jesus Our Mediator (Hebrews 5)

Bridges connect one land mass with another. I was up in Mackinaw last week and my wife and I spent some time in the park at the base of the Mackinac Bridge. This impressive five-mile structure makes it possible to visit the upper peninsula any time we desire. As the Eternal Son of God, Jesus is the ultimate bridge, through his work on the Cross, connecting God the Father with a sinful humanity. He is our mediator.

1Tim. 2:5-6 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.

Hebrews uses another title to describe this same function. Jesus is our high priest! Jesus mediates (bridges the gap) between God and us, all the while interceding on our behalf.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

Evening Service: The Famine Continues – Part 2 (Genesis 43)

The famine continues to be severe both in Egypt and Canaan. The grain Jacob’s sons had brought back from their first trip to Egypt was gone. Jacob was forced into a decision that he did not want to make. After Judah’s promptings, he sends Benjamim with his other sons back to Egypt for more grain. Joseph has some more surprises for them upon their return.

Have you been warm this week? July has hit Michigan and with it the warmth and humidity of mid-summer. Our country celebrates its 250th birthday on Saturday. I am very thankful for the freedom and protection this country offers. It is easy to become discouraged by things we would love to see changed. However, God has given us a place to live where we can freely worship Him. Please spend some time this weekend thanking God for His many blessings. Celebrate with your families on Saturday and come Sunday ready to worship the God who has made us spiritually free.

Morning Service: Finding Spiritual Rest (Hebrews 4)

For a generation that’s really into “self-care,” we sure are bad at resting. We schedule vacations that are more exhausting than our regular lives and take a day off as an excuse to make a dent in the honey -do list. The Bible starts with God creating the world in six days and resting on the seventh—not because he was tired but because he was setting the rhythm. Rest wasn’t an afterthought. It was built into creation itself. Physical rest is important, spiritual rest is more important. For the believer, these two concepts are linked. Spiritual rest is simply being at peace with God. Living in obedience and close relationship with the God who created you.

We will have the opportunity to celebrate the rest and freedom God has for us in observing the Lord’s Table.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

I hope you have had a good week and have plans to enjoy this beautiful weekend. Ladies – remember there is a baby shower for Mekenzie Sobie at the church Saturday morning at 9:30 AM. The invite is open to all the ladies of FBC.

Sunday is just around the corner and as we continue our study in Hebrews we will continue to see the greatness of Jesus.

Morning Service: Consider Jesus (Hebrews 3)

The preacher of this great sermon we call Hebrews has spent much time building up the greatness of Jesus. Now in somewhat of a culmination moment, he simply calls those who have placed their trust in Jesus to “consider Jesus.” In English when we think of the word consider, we tend to reduce it to a choice. When we consider dinner, we seek to decide on this food or that. However, the Greek word for consider is much stronger than that. It has the idea to pay attention to or to observe carefully, to think about carefully. That is just what we plan to do Sunday morning.

To prepare yourself to be ready to worship when the service begins, these are the songs the worship team has been working on for Sunday.

House of the Lord
Our Only Hope is You

My God is All I Need (My God is So Big)

Evening Service: Brother to Brother (Genesis 42)

The seven years of abundance in Egypt was now complete, and famine had now set in. Jacob and his family were in severe need of grain. Little did the brothers know that their sin of selling Joseph 20 years before was about to come full circle. Ten brothers make the trek to Egypt to get grain. One other brother Joseph, was in charge of the grain and in charge of making his brothers deal with the sin they had committed so many years before.
