She serves as the founder and Senior Pastor of Koinonia (Pronounced Coin-o-nia) Christian Center Church as well as a Bishop that oversees 22 state-side and international churches in the Koinonia Fellowship of Churches and Ministries, Inc. I had to learn that loving people and giving people access are two different things.

I can love you and not tell you everything. I can honor you without allowing you to influence my decisions. I can forgive you and still recognize that our relationship cannot return to what it was.

That isn’t bitterness. That’s wisdom.

Your heart can remain open while your boundaries remain healthy.

Everybody deserves unconditional love. Everybody does not require unconditional access.

Protecting what God entrusted to you is part of living the good life.

Sometimes God will let people leave your circle because they were never supposed to stay. They may not be bad people. You don’t have to demonize them, expose them, or make them the villain. They simply may no longer be in sync with your faith, your future, or the rhythm of your life.

And when they leave without an explanation, stop driving yourself crazy trying to make it make sense.
Some things you cannot control. Some endings you will never understand. You have to trust that God sifted it.

Let them go. Keep your heart clean. Trust God with who stays and who leaves. Sometimes losing a person isn’t rejection. It’s protection.

Before we even talk about who is in your circle, we have to talk about who you are without them. Healthy friendship should never replace individual faith, individual focus, or the responsibility you have for your own life. I love my people. I value my circle. But I still have to be a whole person.

My prayer life matters. My habits matter. My vision matters. And I have to create enough margin in my life that the people I love never become my source. Your circle can encourage you, pray with you, laugh with you, cry with you, and walk beside you. But they were never designed to sustain you.

God is your source. Your circle is support. Knowing the difference is the key!

Friendship breakups hurt. And sometimes the hardest ones are the relationships that didn't end with a big argument. They just... changed. I've had to learn to ask myself: was it wickedness, or was it weakness?

Sometimes people aren't trying to hurt you. They're carrying things you don't know about, fighting battles they haven't shared, or simply don't have the capacity to be who they once were in your life. Their distance doesn't always mean rejection, and it certainly doesn't determine your value. I've learned to leave room for grace while still making the clean breaks necessary to keep my heart pure. Everybody who leaves doesn't have to become an enemy. Every relationship that changes doesn't need a villain.

Don't let a broken circle create a broken version of you. Heal. Forgive. Adjust the access when necessary. Leave the light on for grace. And keep living the good life. Broken Circles teaching dropped September 5.

There are some people you can talk to about relationships, and then there are people who have lived enough life to talk about them with wisdom. That’s why I was so excited to sit down with Latrice Ryan for our Inner Circle series on Living the Good Life.

We talked about friendship, loyalty, access, boundaries, disappointment, growth, and what happens when God starts changing you and everybody around you doesn’t necessarily understand the change. Because here’s what I know: everybody can’t have the same access to you in every season.

The good life is not just about where you’re going. It’s also about having the wisdom to recognize who should be walking closely with you as you get there. Latrice brought truth, laughter, experience, and the kind of honesty that makes you stop and examine your own circle.

I always wanted to play basketball, so spending time with Coach Kim McNeill and these young women has been incredibly special.

What stands out most is their discipline, leadership, work ethic, and heart. Watching them grow into strong women on and off the court has been a joy.

And yes, they gave me my own jersey too. That meant more than they know.

This is part of the good life too, pouring into the next generation and celebrating who they are becoming. 💜💛
