Bible in a Year โ€“ Week 22
Day 154 โ€“ Unity
Philippians 2:1โ€“2 โ€“ Unity in Christ

โ€œThen make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.โ€ โ€“ Philippians 2:2

True unity begins with Christ.

When our hearts are centered on Him, we find common ground even in the middle of our differences.

Paul encourages believers to be like-minded, not because they are identical, but because they share the same love, the same Savior, and the same purpose.

Unity grows when we focus on what we have in common in Christ instead of what separates us.

Cathy Commentary

I think one of the biggest threats to unity is forgetting what brought us together in the first place.

It's easy to get caught up in opinions, preferences, personalities, and disagreements.

Before long, we're focused on our differences instead of our shared faith.

Paul reminds the Philippians to have the same love and be one in spirit.

That doesn't mean everyone has to think exactly alike.

John Wesley stated that we may not all think a like but we must all love alike!!

If God wanted us all the same, He wouldn't have made us so different.

What it does mean is that Christ becomes more important than our opinions!!

The older I get, the more I realize that most things aren't worth losing relationships over.

I've been right before and still damaged a relationship.

I've won an argument and lost an opportunity to show grace.

Unity doesn't happen because everyone gets their way.

It happens when people choose humility, kindness, and love.

And honestly, the world needs more of that.

When people see believers loving one another despite differences, they see a glimpse of Jesus.

Journal Prompt
Am I focusing more on what I share with other believers, or on the things that separate us?

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the unity we have through Christ.

Help me keep my focus on You when differences arise.

Teach me to walk in humility, love, and grace.

May my words and actions strengthen relationships rather than divide them.

Help me reflect Your heart in the way I treat others.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

I find it interesting that some will use one passage in 1 Timothy to say women cannot preach or pastor, while overlooking the many places in Scripture where God used women to lead, teach, prophesy, and proclaim His truth.

We don't build our theology on a single verse taken in isolation; we look at the whole counsel of God's Word.

Throughout Scripture, God used women such as Deborah, Priscilla, Phoebe, and Junia.

We interpret difficult passages in light of the whole Bible, not the whole Bible in light of one difficult passage.

I respect those who see 1 Timothy differently than I do. But I cannot ignore the evidence of God's calling and the fruit He has produced through women in ministry.

I didn't call myself into ministry...God did.

My calling is not based on winning an argument. It's based on faithfully following where Christ has led, and trusting the Holy Spirit who still calls and equips both men and women for His work.

Bible in a Year โ€“ Week 22
Day 153 โ€“ Unity
John 17:20โ€“23 โ€“ Jesus Prays for Unity

โ€œMy prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in Me through their message, that all of them may be one...โ€ โ€“ John 17:20โ€“21

Just before His arrest and crucifixion, Jesus prayed for His followers.

And what was one of His greatest prayers?

Unity.

Not success.
Not popularity.
Not comfort.

Unity!

Jesus knew the world would see something powerful when believers loved one another and stood together in Him.

Cathy Commentary

I think it's amazing that Jesus prayed for us.

Not just the disciples standing there that nightโ€”but us.

The church. People who would follow Him centuries later.

And one of the things He specifically prayed for was unity.

That tells me unity matters a lot to God.

Because let's be honest, division comes naturally.

Unity takes work.

It takes humility when we'd rather be right.

It takes grace when someone annoys us.

It takes love when differences get in the way.

And yet Jesus prayed that we would be one.

Not because we're all the same.

Not because we all agree on every detail.

But because we belong to Him.

I've often thought about what+ the church could be if we spent less time fighting each other and more time loving each other.

The world already knows how to divide.

Jesus calls us to something better.

When we choose love over division, grace over offense, and relationship over pride, we reflect the heart of Christ.

And maybe that's exactly what Jesus had in mind when He prayed that night.

Journal Prompt
How can I help strengthen unity in my church, family, or relationships this week?

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for praying for us.

Help me be part of the answer to that prayer.

Give me a humble heart, a gracious spirit, and a willingness to choose unity over division.

Teach me to love others the way You love me.

May my life reflect the unity You desire for Your people.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible in a Year โ€“ Week 22
Day 152 โ€“ Unity
1 Corinthians 1:10 โ€“ Same Mind and Judgment

โ€œI appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.โ€ โ€“ 1 Corinthians 1:10

The church in Corinth was struggling with division.

People were choosing sides, arguing over leaders, and allowing disagreements to pull them apart.

Paul reminds them that their focus should not be on personalities, preferences, or opinions.

Their focus should be on Christ.

Unity happens when we remember Who brings us together.

Cathy Commentary

Church people haven't changed much in 2,000 years.

The Corinthians were arguing about who they followed, who was right, and whose opinions mattered most.

Sound familiar?

It's amazing how quickly we can get distracted by things that really aren't the main thing.

I've seen churches divided over music, paint colors, traditions, budgets, and a hundred other things.

Meanwhile, the mission sits waiting.

Paul wasn't asking everyone to become robots and think exactly alike.

He was calling them to keep Christ at the center.

Because when Jesus is at the center, many of the things we argue about become much smaller.

The older I get, the more I realize that being right isn't always the most important thing.

Sometimes protecting relationships, showing grace, and keeping the church united matters more.

The world sees enough division every day.

What a witness it would be if people looked at the church and saw love, respect, and unity instead.

Journal Prompt
Am I focusing more on traditions and opinions, or on the mission and message of Christ?

Prayer

Lord,

Keep my heart centered on You.

Help me not get distracted by minor disagreements or personal preferences.

Teach me to value unity, show grace, and work alongside others for Your kingdom.

May my words and actions help bring people together rather than drive them apart.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible in a Year โ€“ Week 22
Day 151 โ€“ Unity
Ephesians 4:3โ€“6 โ€“ Unity of the Spirit

โ€œMake every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.โ€ โ€“ Ephesians 4:3

Unity is something we must protect.

Paul reminds us to "make every effort" to keep it. That tells me unity doesn't just happen on its own.

It requires patience.
It requires humility.
It requires grace.

As believers, we are united by something far greater than our differencesโ€”we are united by Christ.

One body.
One Spirit.
One Lord.
One faith.

Cathy Commentary

I find it interesting that Paul says, "Make every effort."

Because unity takes effort.

It's easy to get offended.

Easy to assume the worst.

Easy to let little disagreements become big divisions.

But unity requires us to do the harder thing.

To listen.

To extend grace.

To remember that not every disagreement has to become a battle.

Now, unity doesn't mean we all agree on everything.

If you've ever been part of a family, a church, or a ministry team, you know that's not realistic.

People see things differently.

They have different experiences, personalities, and opinions.

But Paul reminds us to focus on what we share.

We serve the same Lord.

We follow the same Savior.

We belong to the same family of faith.

I've learned that Satan loves division because divided people accomplish very little.

But when God's people work together, support one another, and keep Christ at the center, amazing things happen.

Unity isn't about being identical.

It's about being connected.

Journal Prompt
Am I helping strengthen unity in my relationships and church, or am I allowing small offenses to create division?

Prayer

Lord,

Help me be a person who protects unity.

Give me patience when others frustrate me, humility when I think I'm right, and grace when disagreements arise.

Keep my focus on what unites us in Christ rather than what divides us.

Use me to build peace, encouragement, and unity wherever I go.

In Jesus' name, Amen.

Bible in a Year โ€“ Week 22
Day 150 โ€“ Unity
Psalm 133:1 โ€“ The Beauty of Unity

โ€œHow good and pleasant it is when God's people live together in unity!โ€ โ€“ Psalm 133:1

Unity is one of God's greatest gifts to His people.

It doesn't mean we all think alike, act alike, or agree on everything.

It means we choose love over division, grace over offense, and relationship over being right.

When people live and work together in unity, there is a beauty that reflects the heart of God.

Cathy Commentary

Let's be honest.

Unity isn't always easy.

Families disagree.

Churches disagree.

Friends disagree.

And if you've ever served on a church committee, you know exactly what I'm talking about. ๐Ÿ˜Š

The goal of unity isn't for everyone to become the same person.

God created us differently on purpose.

Unity happens when we remember that what unites us is greater than what divides us.

As Christians, we won't agree on every preference, every opinion, or every method.

But we can still love one another.

We can still respect one another.

We can still worship together.

I've learned that division often starts when we focus more on our differences than on Christ.

But when we keep our eyes on Jesus, many of those differences begin to shrink.

Unity is precious because it doesn't happen by accident.

It requires humility.

It requires grace.

It requires choosing relationships over winning arguments.

And when God's people walk in unity, it becomes a powerful witness to the world around us.

John Wesley said, "
Though we cannot think alike, may we not love alike? May we not be of one heart, though we are not of one opinion? Without all doubt, we may. Herein all the children of God may unite, notwithstanding these smaller differences."

Journal Prompt

Is there a relationship, group, or situation where I need to choose unity over being right?

Prayer

Lord,

Thank You for the gift of unity.

Help me be a person who brings people together rather than pushes them apart.

Teach me to walk in humility, patience, and grace.

Keep my eyes on You and help me value relationships more than arguments.

May my life reflect the love and unity You desire for Your people.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
