Friends in Christ,

I am writing to inform you of the passing of Rev. Michael Butler on 7 September 2026. Fr. Butler is a retired priest of the diocese of Raleigh and former Pastor of St. Gabriel Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements have yet to be made. There will be a mass tomorrow at noon for Fr. Butlers intention at St. Peter. Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Butler through the intercession of Mary Mother of Priests.

As the Church prepares for the beatification of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen on Sept. 24, 2026, at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Catholics across the country are reflecting on the life and legacy of one of the most influential Catholic communicators of the 20th century.

The Diocese of Raleigh has its own connection to Archbishop Sheen.

On Dec. 8, 1974, he served as homilist for the Diocese of Raleigh’s 50th Anniversary Mass. The celebration, held at Dorton Arena because Sacred Heart [then] Cathedral was too small to accommodate the expected crowd, had been planned as a joyful golden jubilee observance for the diocese.

Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle: he is believed to have been the same as Nathanael, born in Cana of Galilee, and brought by Philip to Christ Jesus at the Jordan. Afterwards the Lord called him to follow him, and included him among the Twelve. After the Ascension of the Lord it is recorded that he preached the Gospel in India, and was there crowned with martyrdom.
