"Jesus came to preach good news to the poor." 📖✨

In our latest episode, Mitch Miller breaks down why the West Side of Greenville is such a vital mission field. It isn’t about comparing struggles to other cities or countries—it’s about being faithful to where God has placed us.

Why the West Side?
Greenville is a city of incredible growth, but following Jesus means intentionally moving toward the places where life is "worse than normal." It means stepping into the lives of:

The disadvantaged.

Those who have been dealt a difficult hand.

The poor in spirit.

As Mitch puts it: "If we're following Jesus, this would be the side of town where we find a lot of the people he primarily hung out with."

True discipleship isn't about finding the most comfortable neighborhood—it's about taking care of everyone in our city, especially those the world often overlooks.

Update from the Block

🌱 Sowing Seeds on the Block

A couple of years ago, our student ministry had the incredible opportunity to host a weekly Bible study with about 100 local middle schoolers. On day one, I asked how many of them knew who the Apostle Paul was.

Only about 5 hands went up. ✋

It wasn’t that these kids had rejected Jesus; they just had never been given the opportunity to know Him. For a whole year, we got to change that by sharing biblical stories with them every single week.

Eventually, that door closed... but the story didn't end there.

🏀 A Basketball Court Update
The other day, my youth minister and I were out playing basketball in the community when we ran into one of those former students. I asked her, "Hey, you still thinking about Jesus?"

Her face lit up. She told me she’d gotten a graphic novel Action Bible and was currently diving deep into the Ten Commandments! 📖✨

I am so incredibly proud of her for seeking truth so she can make an informed decision about her faith.

💡 The Big Takeaway
This encounter was a powerful reminder of how ministry works:

Our job is to sow seeds whenever and wherever we have the opportunity.

We don't always know how long a door will stay open.

We are called to be faithful in the moment, trusting that by God's grace, we might eventually get to see that fruit grow.

Spiritual gifts aren’t badges of maturity—they’re tools for unity. 🛠️✨

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul reminds a divided church that the Holy Spirit doesn't distribute gifts to give anyone a platform or a reason to boast.

Here are three truths to remember about your spiritual gifts:
1️⃣ Character over Charisma: Spiritual gifts are given freely, but spiritual fruit (character) is built through obedience. Gifts are meant to point to the lordship of Jesus, not how "cool" we are.
2️⃣ Equal Value, Different Roles: Just like the Triune God is equal in divinity but distinct in role, every Christian is equal in value but given unique gifts for the common good.
3️⃣ You Find Gifts by Serving: You don't always need a test to find your gift. Look for your god-given burdens, show up where there's a gap, and see where God blesses your steps.

When you step into the avenue of service God has empowered you for, that’s often where you’ll feel His presence the most!

What’s a gap or a burden God is putting on your heart this week? 👇

Stop taking communion with your fingers crossed behind your back. 🤞🚫

There is a massive difference between the disciple who struggles with sin and the one who plans for it. All the apostles "tripped" and failed Jesus that night, but only Judas sat at the table planning to betray Him.

God isn’t asking for perfection—He’s asking for honesty. If you aren't ready to fight your sin, don't play games with Him. But if you’re ready to fight, even if it’s imperfect, He’s ready to help.

Stop pretending. Get honest.

📍 An Update from the Block: Why We Stay
When Pastor Will first started prayer walking in our community 9 years ago, the number one question people asked him was heartbreakingly simple:

"When are you leaving?"

It was a wake-up call. Too often, the relationship between communities and churches is purely transactional. People come in, do a quick service project to feel good, and then they leave.

But that isn't the gospel, and that’s not who we are.

When ministries constantly pack up and go, it communicates that the church isn't truly for the community. We want to change that narrative. We are here to plant deep roots so our neighbors know they can rely on us—and ultimately, that they can rely on Jesus.

Just like Jesus never leaves us, His church should be a constant, steady presence, especially in the places that need it most.

How you can partner with us today:

🙏 Pray: Pray that we can continue to love, stay, and serve our community well.

🌱 Give: Consider investing financially to help us plant even deeper roots.

🤝 Join: If you want to join our mission, we’d love to link arms and teach you everything we know.

God bless!

The "Gut-Check" Church Test 🔽

It’s incredibly easy to talk about unity, righteousness, and social justice out there in the world. But what does it actually look like inside our church doors? 🚪

In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul delivers a heavy rebuke to the early church. The wealthy members were starting the fellowship meals early, leaving the working-class members—who couldn't control their work schedules—with absolutely nothing.

They weren't being malicious; they just weren't being considerate.

True gospel community demands that we actively cross barriers—socioeconomic, generational, and cultural. If we only hang out with people who look, think, and live exactly like us, we aren't putting the power of the resurrection on display.

We have to be a model community before we try to be a prophetic community.

💬 Drop a comment: What is one practical way we can break out of our comfortable "cliques" and build truer community this week?

"If you’re gonna love them well, you have to seek to be a student of their culture." ✍️📖

Pastor Will is challenging us: Culture isn't just something across the ocean—it’s on your block, in your office, and at your gym. People care about different things and say things in different ways.

If we want to share the Gospel effectively, we have to understand two things:
1️⃣ Culture: The behaviors and beliefs of the group.
2️⃣ Conscience: The inner sense of right and wrong.

Everybody's conscience doesn't agree! 🤯 Loving people means doing the work to understand them so we don't unnecessarily offend them. Let’s stop being lazy and start being students of the people God has placed in our lives.
