For the past few Sunday mornings, we’ve been making our way through the Psalms of Ascent. These are a collection of psalms that were often sung and recited as God’s people journeyed to Jerusalem for the various holy days and festivals.
But these aren’t merely ancient songs preserved in a museum. They are songs meant to guide and help us as we journey towards the presence of God with the people of God. That’s why we’re working through these songs as a kind of playlist for Christian discipleship.
So far, we’ve covered themes of repentance, God’s providence, and corporate worship. We’ve also sought to make these psalms and themes part of our discipleship throughout the week through a summer reading plan.
In God’s kindness, these psalms have been a timely gift to Gospel Hope Church.
Just as every individual disciple is on a journey, so is every church. That journey is rarely simple or straightforward. In many ways, Gospel Hope is still near the beginning of the road.
For the most part, we’ve experienced the excitement that often comes at the start of a journey. We’ve seen God gather more disciples through baptism and membership. We’ve had opportunities to invite others onto the path through evangelism and outreach. We’ve also sought to care for one another along the way.
And though our goal of being a gospel-centered church that looks to Jesus, loves another, and lives on mission hasn’t shifted, we still don’t know what lies ahead.
I don’t say that because I’m doubtful about the future. I say it because even when the destination is clear, there are still turns, potholes, and switchbacks that we cannot yet see.
Jesus has promised to build his Church, and it seems that he's doing that in part by building our local church right now. In one sense, I want to see Gospel Hope Church grow to be a “self-sustaining” family. At the same time, I’m regularly reminded me that we should never think of ourselves as “self-sustaining”.
We exist today because Jesus is sustaining us. We also exist because individuals and churches outside of Gospel Hope continue to sustain us through prayer, financial support, encouragement, and friendship. Jesus and his people have been faithful companions on our journey.
These psalms have also reminded me that the pace of any worthwhile journey is often slow. We live in a world that craves quick results and rapid growth. But discipleship isn’t a sprint or a project we can complete overnight. It is, as Eugene Peterson said, “a long obedience in the same direction.”
As Gospel Hope continues to walk slowly down this road, I’m grateful for the assurance that God’s people are with us and that the Lord Jesus, the true pilgrim who has gone before us, is with us every step of the way.
