In Taoism, the spiritual teacher Lao Tzu said, "Being deeply loved by someone gives us strength, while loving someone deeply gives us courage." As a Reconciling in Christ congregation, we've been on a journey into God's expansive grace for years. We've come to the conclusion that God loves everyone, we are called to embody that love as best we can, and "all means ALL!" What difference does that make for those who discover God's love perhaps for the first time? What difference does it make for those who share God's freely given love with others? Let's celebrate our RIC identity on Sunday, as we worship together around our reading, Romans 13:8-12.

This Sunday, the final Sunday of our Season of Creation, we go down to the river, returning together to the living waters of God. We give thanks for the rivers that bring life and make human community possible, and we marvel at the currents that have led us to this time and this place together.

In all the infinite range of life in the creation that is God's cosmos, every gathering of people is a unique and unprecedented event, never to be repeated. It may feel like the most ordinary and unremarkable thing, but it is an unmerited and unimaginable blessing that we—out of all possible lives, times, and places--should find each other in this river, here and now.

So let us make the most of each moment we share. All are invited for a 5th Sunday brunch between the worship services at 10 am. Let us break bread with our neighbors, get to know each other a little better, and consider ourselves one, as the holy currents of God's river have been moving in our lives.

Our theme this week in the Season of Creation is "wilderness." It is the place of wildlife, the kind of place humans only pass through on their way somewhere else.

But truly untamed "wilderness" in our world is getting harder and harder to find. The developing human world expands, and the wilderness recedes. And that's a little dispiriting already, but then the really insidious thing happens. The human world expands in some places, but then in another place it recedes. But when we step back, when the human world recedes to return a space to the wild, we don't leave behind wilderness so much as wasteland.

As much as we love and depend on the wildlife of this planet, we so often find ourselves crushing it under the weight of our own needs, our own expansion. But somehow, in spite of everything, whether or not we deserve it, this wounded world continues to give us what we need to thrive. This wounded creation, that is the crucified body of God, continues to invite us in, seeking to make us whole.
