The first woman ordained in the United Church of Christ (and the first woman ordained in any mainstream Protestant denomination in the United States) was Rev. Antoinette Brown (later Antoinette Brown Blackwell).She was ordained on September 15, 1853, by the Congregational Church in South Butler, New York. Because the Congregational Church is a historic predecessor to the modern United Church of Christ, the UCC is widely recognized as the first Christian denomination to ordain a woman.

Antoinette Brown was a trailblazer, not just as a pastor, but as a prominent public speaker, abolitionist, and women's rights advocate. Her legacy is celebrated today by the UCC's Antoinette Brown Society, which advocates for women in ministry and leadership.
