Dear Church Family,
This morning, just before 10:00 am, there was a shooting incident at Leinbach Park, across the street from Mount Tabor UMC. We were notified by law enforcement and immediately went into lockdown as the situation was still unfolding.
Law enforcement from multiple agencies responded and requested to use our parking lot as a staging area. At one point, our building was also considered as a possible reunification site for students and parents from Jefferson Middle School. That need later changed, and we were not ultimately asked to serve in that capacity.
Out of an abundance of caution, we released our preschool children early and canceled Tabor Troupers and After School programming for the day. For a time, traffic was routed through our parking lots, and our staff graciously assisted law enforcement officers, parents, and other visitors as needed. We are deeply grateful for the quick response and faithful care of our preschool staff, children’s ministry staff, and all who helped respond with calm and compassion.
Sadly, we have learned that what began as a reported planned fight resulted in seven individuals, ages 14–19, being shot and sustaining varying levels of injury. Two juveniles have died. We grieve this tragic loss of life and the trauma experienced by so many.
On Tuesday, April 21 from 4-6:00pm the Sanctuary will be open for a time of Prayer and Reflection to show our love and support for our community. Please keep the children, families, schools, and our entire community in your prayers. May God bring healing where there is pain, hope where there is despair, and peace in the midst of sorrow.
In Christ,
Pastor David
