This is a little late in posting.
About 18 years ago, I met a gentleman at a gathering of like minded Christians who were exploring new ways to better understand our calling. After discovering that he had recently become chaplain at St. Mary's House, we began discussing the finer points of Anglicanism- having been raised in the tradition, only to realize that I was mostly wrong in what I thought! (Oh, to be in my 30's again, and to think I knew everything!)
Fast forward 8 years, and I finally heard where God was calling me. Like I usually do, I started talking to everyone I can. that led me back to this gentleman. After lots of discussion, prayer and meditation, I started the process towards ordination into the Episcopal Diaconate.
It wasn't long before Kevin Matthews became both my sponsor, and after my ordination, my friend and partner in crime at St. Mary's House. Over the last 8 years, we have laughed, cried, explored new ideas, made friends, and said goodbye to others. We survived Covid, and tried (and many times failed!) many programs for the students at UNCG.
Kevin taught me grace, patience, and humility in a place where many students felt at best disassociated with, or at worst, hostile to, organized religion. Through his guidance, friendship, and wisdom, I have a better understanding of my calling. Kevin gave me the space to try new things, and to make St. Mary's House a safe and welcoming home for all.
I couldn't have asked for a better friend and mentor.
I've been honored to know and learn from so many great people. Kevin, thank you for being one of those. As Ryan and Will both can attest, you made a significant and positive change in our lives, and I hope that, through God's grace, we can continue the work you helped us start.
Happy retirement, my friend. May you and Merlin find new and interesting things to do, people to meet, and lives to enlighten.
