Bernie Sanders just forced the Senate to go on record. He filed Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to block roughly $658.8 million in bomb sales to Israel — and made his colleagues vote on it out in the open.

The resolutions failed. The first went down around 40 to 59, the second roughly 36 to 63 in mid-April. The weapons sale moves forward. But Sanders made sure every senator's position is now on the record for the public to see.

His argument is simple: U.S. taxpayers should not be funding bombs used in a war that has killed tens of thousands of civilians. He's pushed for months to attach conditions to American military aid and to force a debate that leadership in both parties would rather avoid.

Critics say the sale supports a key U.S. ally's right to defend itself and that blocking it ties the hands of an elected government. Supporters of Sanders say a democracy should at least be allowed to vote on where its weapons go.
