Governments Derive Their Power from the CONSENT of the People. Have we lost sight off this basic truth that inspired this adventure we call The United States of America?

These are the opening words of the second paragraph of the United States Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, the complete passage states:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The Declaration laid out the philosophical foundation for the American Revolution, asserting that governments derive their just powers only from the consent of the governed.
