The Sincerest Form of Worship
The young athlete steps onto the field. He positions himself just like the professionals. His gestures mimic those he has seen on TV. He has the same swagger. He adjusts his uniform even when it doesn’t need adjusting. He even spits with the same casual indifference. Why? Because this is what he loves. We are naturally transformed into the likeness of whatever we adore. We step into the same image as the object of our passions. We become what we behold.
Imitation is not only the sincerest form of flattery; it’s also the sincerest form of worship. When we love something, our attitudes, words, and behavior gravitate toward that love. We tend to wear our passions openly, even when we don’t intend to.
That’s the key to transformation. You want to become more Christlike? It’s less a matter of training than of love. If you cultivate the devotion of your heart, the outward manifestations will occur naturally. Like a boy competing on the field, a teenager who dresses like his favorite singer, or adults who mimic the highly successful in their careers, your love for Jesus will shape you. And your life will become a picture of true worship.
