We came across our original mission statement from 1987 and found it still fairly true:
Our Mission Statement
The Catholic Community of Greenbelt provides and opportunity for individual and collective Christian witness, spiritual growth and ministry.
Explanatory notes:
1. We are Catholic
2. Communities never “are” but are always “becoming;” we are beginning to become.
3. “Greenbelt” doesn’t imply a geographic limit to participation but the majority of the initial members reside in Greenbelt, and this community grows out of our experience in cooperative effort in Greenbelt
4. “Provides an opportunity” means that each chooses the area and extent of involvement; not all members will be called to all aspects of our community life. Neither do we expect that any one community can meet all of an individual’s spiritual needs at all times.
5. These individuals are of every age, s*x, and race, and may be lay, clerical, and religious.
6. Christian witness is social action, beginning with our continued support of S.O.M.E., but embracing all forms of service to those in need. The mission of Jesus is to set free, to redeem, to reconcile, to heal, to make whole.
7. Spiritual growth, growth in the Spirit, occurs through liturgy, RENEW, and adult formation through lectures, discussions, and classes.
8. The present forms of ministry include:
