This Sunday is Trinity Sunday and God’s Word will teach us that the Holy Trinity graciously and savingly reveals Himself to Sinners.
We will read of Isaiah beholding the glory of the Lord, and crying out “Woe is me!” This is his cry because no sinner can stand in the consuming presence of a holy God and live (Is. 6:1–7). Even so, God the Father lifted up His Son Jesus for us on the cross, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. This eternal life of Christ is given to us freely through the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit that is held out to us in our Baptism. We will hear the Lord make this very point to Nicodemus in today’s gospel reading, as He says: “Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). And yet there is much more to glean from the lectionary readings on this Trinity Sunday.
We will also see that as it was with Isaiah and the ministry of the angels (literally “messengers”) of God to him, so it is for us today in Christ’s Body, the Church. Though we come as sinners in fear of death, our Lord has appointed messengers of God to proclaim the comfort of the gospel, to place on our lips the true body and blood of Christ, and to speak His words of absolution, not unlike those words heard by Isaiah: “Your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for” (Is. 6:7). Having received forgiveness and life from the Father through the Son by the Holy Spirit, we can now join with the angels in praising the blessed Trinity, “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts!” (Is. 6:3). Furthermore, we can go on to live lives marked by assurance and joy in our triune God, confessing that: “from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen” (Rom. 11:33–36).
