Before Green Bay was a city, before the Diocese, before most of the landmarks we know today — there was St. John the Evangelist.

Founded in 1831 by Dominican missionary Father Samuel Mazzuchelli, St. John's is the oldest continuous Catholic congregation in Wisconsin. It began as a small log church near what is now the Allouez Cemetery, serving French-Canadian fur traders and local Indigenous communities. From that humble beginning, it grew into the "mother church" of Green Bay — the German, Irish, Dutch, and Belgian parishes that shaped this city all trace their roots back here.

But the road wasn't easy. The congregation's first three church buildings were each destroyed by fire — in 1847, 1872, and 1911. Each time, the community rebuilt.

The breathtaking church you see in this photo is the fourth — completed in 1915. Designed in the French Romanesque Revival style by architect Henry Foeller, its signature asymmetrical towers, triple-arched entrance, and soaring brick façade have been a landmark on St. John Street for over 110 years. Inside, stunning stained-glass windows hand-crafted in Chartres, France by the legendary Lorin atelier cast light that has welcomed generations of Green Bay families.

Nearly two centuries after its founding, St. John the Evangelist still stands — and still serves. Some things in Green Bay never change. 💚

Homeless Persons’ Memorial Day 🕯️
Free and open to the public

Near the longest night of the year, our community will gather to remember and honor neighbors who have died this year while experiencing or having recently experienced housing instability.

At the 16th Annual Greater Green Bay Homeless Persons’ Interfaith Memorial Service, candles will be carried, names will be read aloud, and stories will be remembered - often the only public recognition these individuals receive.

This evening is a sacred time of reflection, mourning, and a moment to say: You are seen. You mattered.

Your presence means more than you know. By joining us, you show our unhoused neighbors that their community cares and remind the families and friends of those lost that their loved ones are not forgotten.

This service is part of a national observance held each year by the National Coalition for the Homeless. Together, we remember those we’ve lost and we continue working toward a future where everyone has a safe place to call home.

All are welcome.
