We were pleased to once again host Green Bay's S.W.A.T. team at Grace yesterday. They find our large facility with its many rooms and staircases very useful for their training exercises.

Singing beloved liturgies and hymns firmly situates us as God’s beloved people of faith, now and always. With the psalmist, we sing out, “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations” (Psalm 90:1). Whether we take part in time-tested melodies or try out new music, we join with all of God’s creation in singing and making music to the God who created and loves us all. We learn the breadth of God’s story and our place in it, in a new way.

In liturgies and songs of faith old and new, there is space for each of us to belong. Music gives us something solid to say when we lack the words. The church local and universal carries the melody when our voice falters. The music of the church – whatever instruments or voices are used, whatever words are shared or held in silence – creates a space and a place for all to belong, to grow and to be held in the melody of God’s love.

We can no longer afford to live in an artificially manufactured separation. It’s not sustainable, and it’s not right. Scripture teaches: “Love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor...Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers” (Romans 12:10, 13).

Other teachers come from the next generation. Watch small children who are familiar with people of various colors, ages, ethnicities and genders. They don’t see “me” and “them.” They see “we.” That’s the greatest legacy we can leave our children – a world that truly sees all of us as God’s own.

As Quaker missionary Stephen Grellet once wrote,” I expect to pass through this world but once; any good thing therefore that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any fellow creature, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again.”

We have one life to get it right – to live in a way that honors our sacred role as disciples of Jesus Christ, the One who welcomed everyone at the banquet table. I can’t imagine a better way to uphold that legacy than to dedicate ourselves to seeing our commonalities first.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Postal Carriers' Food Drive last weekend! Grace's food pantry received an amazing amount of food from that drive, and a great variety! The bags of food literally filled the back of Warren's truck and Pam's SUV. This team of helpers showed up Saturday morning to sort everything.
